R4R@Q - Accelerate your research with Supercomputing

Date

Thursday November 23, 2023
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Location

Online on Teams

In this session, the Centre for Advanced Computing (CAC) hosts a webinar designed to delve into the comprehensive range of systems and services offered by the CAC. Designed to support and empower your research, this session will provide a detailed overview of the state-of-the-art infrastructure, cutting-edge technologies, and expert support available at the CAC.

The CAC understands that research can not be served by a one-size-fits-all solution, so they provide a traditional HPC environment, but also offer custom-tailored solutions to fit every research requirement. By the end of this session, you will understand the various systems offered by the CAC, who can use them, and what their purpose is. Additionally, you will leave with a solid understanding of the specialized services offered by the CAC's cognitive development hub and how these resources can be leveraged to tackle complex computational challenges and streamline research processes. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or new to high-performance computing, this session will equip you with the knowledge and tools necessary to harness the immense potential of supercomputing to amplify your research.

R4R@Q - Science Rendezvous Kingston

Date

Thursday November 30, 2023
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Location

A research outreach and team building opportunity

Science Rendezvous Kingston (SRK) is an annual event hosted by Queen’s Vice-Principal Research Portfolio at the Leon’s Centre. In 2023, we had over 5.3K visitors from Kingston and beyond and 50 interactive booths representing research groups from across Queen’s and local community partners including museums, conservation groups, and secondary schools. Many research groups at Queen’s have been participating in SRK for the past few years and use the event as an opportunity to improve researchers’ and students’ communications and outreach skills. Join this session to learn more about Science Rendezvous and how to join our team of over 430 volunteers to promote your research program.

Research Security Town Hall

Date

Wednesday October 18, 2023
8:30 am - 12:30 pm

Location

Queen's Vice-Principal Research invites you to join us for a Town Hall on October 18, 2023, from 8:30AM-12:30PM for a research security update.

Overview:

The research security landscape in Canada increased in prominence in 2021 with the implementation of Safeguarding Research Guidelines by the federal government and Ontario provincial government. The early implementation of these guidelines was aimed at a very narrow subset of funded research programs, namely the NSERC Alliance program and the Ontario Research Fund programs. Since February 2023, the scope of these guidelines expanded with directives from both the federal and provincial government to make them applicable to all research partnerships at the institution. In addition, the federal government has promised new guidelines, applicable to all federally funded programs including the Tri-Agencies and CFI, which will have implications for which foreign institutions a researcher can partner with and still be eligible for federal research funding. The Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities have also made several recent changes to their research security processes. With those changes in mind, the VP Research is of the view that this is an opportune time to update our research community on these changes and provide an opportunity for them to give feedback on how their implementation will impact their research program. In turn, this will help the VP Research to design processes and support infrastructure that is responsive to the needs of our community. The town hall is open to all faculty members at Queen’s University (including those who are cross-appointed to Kingston Health Sciences Centre, Providence Care, Royal Military College or St. Lawrence College) engaged in research, as well as research administrators.

Program:

  • Opening address from the Vice-Principal Research, Dr. Nancy Ross
  • Special presentation from Public Safety Canada: The big picture threat landscape and federal research security support infrastructure
  • Safeguarding your Research at Queen's presentation: Featuring Ricardo Smalling, Legal Counsel and Director, Research Data Privacy and Security, and Lisa Kozycz, Research Security and Compliance Advisor
  • Q&A support session
  • Light lunch and refreshments will be provided

This is an in-person only event.
