VPR Visiting Artist-in-Residence Fund

The objective of the Vice-Principal Research (VPR) Visiting Artist-in-Residence Fund is to enhance research creation through exchange between faculty at Queen鈥檚 University and the broader arts community.

The fund provides up to $15,000 for eligible costs, including travel, accommodation, subsistence, and artistic supplies/materials/technology.

VPR Visiting Artist-in-Residence intake date for 2025:

May 30, 2025

Residencies should coincide with the academic term cycle and will last up to eight (8) weeks.
September 1 or January 1 would be typical start dates.

 

Eligibility

Applications will come from Queen鈥檚 faculty members who will then host the Visiting Artist. Applications will be assessed on the following three criteria:

  • Quality of the mentoring environment of the Queen鈥檚 faculty member host  (e.g, research and research creation facilities, student engagement, strategies for diverse recruitment of trainees, availability of additional funds to support research creation activities of the Artist-in-Residence)
     
  • Quality of the Artist-in-Residence鈥檚 project proposal (e.g., potential for new knowledge, feasibility, equity/diversity/inclusion in project design and practice)
     
  • Preparation of the Artist for the residency (e.g., artist experience (artist portfolio/CV), success in past projects and impact for career stage)

VPR Visiting Artist-in-Residence Selection Committee

Applications will be reviewed by the VPR Visiting Artist-in-Residence Selection Committee. The Committee will be chaired by the AVPR (SSHRC) and comprised primarily of faculty with expertise in research creation. 

The Selection Committee will make a recommendation for funding to the Vice-Principal Research.

 

How to apply? 

A complete application has four elements:

  1. Up to three pages of text prepared by the Queen鈥檚 faculty member host that addresses the three adjudication criteria (3-page limit):
    • quality of the host's mentoring environment
    • quality of the Artist-in-Residence's project proposal
    • preparation of the Artist for the residency.
       
  2. The proposed Visiting Artist鈥檚 Curriculum Vitae (or similar) (supplied to the host faculty member who submits as part of the VPR Visiting Artist-in-Residence application). (10-page limit)
     
  3. A description of the Visiting Artist鈥檚 proposed project (supplied to the faculty member who submits as part of the VPR Visiting Artist-in-Residence application) (2-page limit)
     
  4. Two letters of recommendation (requested by the proposed Visiting Artist, supplied to the faculty member host who submits as part of the VPR Visiting Artist-in-Residence application) (5-page limit). 

Required reporting: A one-page report of the residency, describing impact of the funding on research creation at Queen鈥檚 is due to the AVP (SSHRC) no later than 60 days following the completion of the residency. Photographs or videos may be included with the one-page report.
