2019-20 - PhD-Community Initiative Projects & Reports

1. Museum of Health Care

Team 鈥Health is Wealth鈥 worked with the Museum of Healthcare to identify ways for the museum to increase engagement of our current members, as well as foster growth of membership overall. This multidisciplinary team is composed of Eduardo de Barros Ferreira (Chemistry), Daniel Asante Boamah (Cultural Studies), Hannah Ascough (Global Development Studies), Sabrina Masud (English), and their mentor, Anne O鈥橰iordan.

2. Kingston Arts Council

The Creative Kingston Initiative鈥 partnered with the Kingston Arts Council to investigate the economic impact of the arts in Kingston. The team considered how the economic impact of the arts in Kingston can be determined and, if possible, conduct research and produce data that demonstrates this impact. This multidisciplinary team is composed of Ellen McGarity-Shipley (Kinesiology and Health Studies), Jake Torrie (Cultural Studies), Colin Vendromin (Physics), Hannah Skrynsky (English), Nafiseh Rezaei (Chemical Engineering), and their mentor, Jane Johnston.

3. City of Kingston Community Housing

The "Kingston Community Housing Team" worked with the City of Kingston to investigate the needs of individuals on the city鈥檚 community housing waitlist and make appropriate recommendations on how to meet these needs. This project builds upon a PhD-Community Initiative project undertaken last year. The multidisciplinary team is composed of Joshua Moskowitz (Neuroscience), Peiyu Wang (Education), Thomas Linder (Sociology), Hannah Ramsay (Chemistry), El Zahraa Majed (Kinesiology and Health Studies), Erika Peter (Psychology), and their mentor, Susan Wilcox.

4. The Cataraqui Conservation Foundation - project 1

The Convincers鈥 partnered with the Cataraqui Conservation Authority to consider fundraising as it relates to corporate sponsorship, especially around outreach and persuasive messaging. This multidisciplinary team is composed of Peiwen Li (Biology), Carola Ramos (Geography), Bailey Smith (Chemistry), Vishrut Shah (Mechanical and Materials Engineering), and their mentor, Stafford Tavares.

5. The Cataraqui Conservation Foundation - project 2

The Catamappers鈥 partnered with the Cataraqui Conservation Authority to do geographic mapping of donors most likely to give large donations ($500+).聽聽This multidisciplinary team is composed of Mark Ouseley (Geography), Liz Favot (Biology), Kavan Shah (Cancer Research), Qian Gu (Biology), Ozlem Atar (Cultural Studies), Joshua Jones (Environmental Studies), and their mentor, Sandra Olney.

6. Physician Recruitment

The "Physician Recruitment Team" worked with the City of Kingston to consider the challenge of access to family physicians in the city. The team investigated ways to better understand, approach, and reverse the current physician shortage.聽The team is composed of James Kwateng-Yeboah (Cultural Studies), Nadia Al Ali (Biomedical and Molecular Sciences), Lindsey Yessick (Psychology), Rutendo Mutambanengwe (Chemical Engineering), Rohit Shukla (Civil Engineering), and their mentors, Margo Paterson and Imbrahim Adel (a PhD-Community Initiative alum!).
