Movies in the Square

Kingston Movies in the Square

Every Thursday, the city of Kingston offers fun, free, family and dog-friendly outdoor movies. Screening begin at dusk, June 15 – August 31 at the Springer Market Square located behind City Hall. There is something so magical about being surrounded by people all watching the same movie under the stars on a giant inflatable screen.

Here is the entertaining line up this year:

Midnight in Paris – June 22
Sherlock Holmes (2009) – June 29
13 Going on 30 – July 13
Ghostbusters: Afterlife – July 20
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – July 27
Mary Poppins Returns – August 3
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – August 10
The Book of Life – August 17
Grease 2 – August 24
Minions: The Rise of Gru – August 31

To make the most out of your open-air movie theatre experience, I have three pieces of advice for you:

One: Arrive early to get a good seat, visit with friends, people watch and say hello to the furry friends.

If you plan to be a regular at the outdoor screenings, consider investing in a comfy chair. I purchased the Tommy Bahama Adjustable Backpack Beach Chairs from Cosco $99/2 chairs which I can easily carry on my back, pack all my snacks in and offer the second to a friend.

Two: Food always tastes better outdoors. Enjoy dinner and a movie or snacks while you watch.

I suggest either bringing leftovers, potluck style food to share with friends or getting takeout from Scores Pizza or Sally’s Roti.

Snacks are also available for purchase: popcorn is $2, drinks are $1 and cotton candy is $4. The staff are great, making it a great place for littles ones to learn to purchase food on their own. Beaver Tails are also very close by.

Three: Leave any stress you might be feeling from school, work or personal life at home. I have found movie night something to look forward to each week and a way to get out of my head for several hours. Sometimes I go with friends and other times it has been nice to go alone. Come to the movie ready to escape, imagine, have fun and laugh.
