The Queensu.ca Domain

According to Queen's Domain Name Policy,, all official university websites and web services must be hosted on the queensu.ca domain or a subdomain of queensu.ca.

Requesting a new URL

New Queen’s University websites should follow one of these formats:

  1. A path within the queensu.ca domain – queensu.ca/new-site-name (recommended).
  2. A subdirectory within the queensu.ca domain – new-site-name.queensu.ca.

Exceptions to this policy may be approved and are recorded in the Domain Registry List managed by Information Technology Services.

Understanding paths and subdomains

Domain name path:

A domain name is a website’s unique address on the Internet, such as yourname.ca or yourname.com)

Web pages within this domain follow a structured path, like queensu.ca/abc/ and queensu.ca/abc/def/...

All sub-paths of the www.queensu.ca domain automatically make use of the Azure Front Door global CDN (content delivery network) that improves page load times for users across the entire globe.

Subdomain:

A subdomain is a prefix added to a domain to specify a particular site or system, such as xyz.queensu.ca.

A subdomain may be requested based on technical reasons; otherwise, using a domain path is the preferred practice.

If choosing a subdomain, you must consider the global performance. The subdomain may need to be configured to use a CDN (content delivery network) to ensure adequate load times for users on the other side of the globe (China, Australia, India).
