The following table summarizes health funding opportunities available only to New Investigators. Not all programs summarized below are currently open & accepting applications. Applicants can, however, use this table to identify possible sources of funding and plan submissions accordingly. The definition of a 'New Investigator' varies between funding agencies. Interested applicants should consult the agency links provided below for the opportunity's eligibility criteria, guidelines, &  submission deadlines.

  • Must be a member of the ACG.
  • Must devote at least 50% of their effort to clinical research related to gastroenterology or hepatology.
Various research topics in psychology

Suicide prevention research
  • Up to $140,000 USD total
  • Duration: 2 years
  • Applicants must have a mentor.
Biomedical research (any area)
  • Up to $30,000
  • Duration: 1 year
  • Only one nomination per department/division.
  • Cannot have more than $50,000/year in external operating grants.
Serious brain & behaviour disorders (schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, & mental illness)
  • $35,000 USD per year
  • Duration: 2 years
  • Applicants must have a mentor.
Pathogenesis, with a focus on the interplay between human and microbial biology
  • $505,000 USD total
  • Duration: 5 years
 
Anesthesia, perioperative medicine, and/or pain management
  • $30,000 total
  • Duration: 1 year
  • Must be a CAS member.
Emergency Medicine
  • Varies by program
  • Must be a CAEP member.
Cancer research
  • $120,000 per year
  • Duration: up to 5 years
  • Must be within 5 years from the start of first independent academic appointment.
  • Must not be recipients of grants aimed at advancing the career development of early career investigators.
Diabetes research (biomedical, clinical, health services, population & public health)
  • $125,000 per year
  • Duration: Up to 3 years

 

Cystic fibrosis research
  • Up to $100K per year
  • Duration: 3 years
  • Applicants must have 50% protected time for research.
  • Cannot have held a CFC grant before.
Research with a demonstrable benefit to Ontario
  • $100,000 total + $50K matching
  • Duration: 5 years

Pain research
  • Up to $20,000 USD
  • Duration: 1 year
  • Applicant must be an IASP member.
Biomedical research (any area)
  • Grants usually range from $25,000 to $80,000 
  • Duration: 1 year
  • New researchers seeking start up grants receive priority.
  • Queen's can submit one application. An internal selection process is run by the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Kidney disease
  • Stipend of $65,000 (PhD) or $70,000 (MD) per year
  • Duration: up to 3 years
  • 50% of the total award must be provided by the applicant's institution.
  • The program will also match up to $25,000 in infrastructure support (lab start up costs, support staff).
Leukemia & Lymphoma research (basic, clinical, or translational research)
  • $120,000 per year salary award
  • Duration: Up to 5 years
  • Must have at least 75% of total research program focused on direct blood cancer research.
  • Must have operating funds to support the proposed research (minimum $200K/year USD).
Spine research (basic, clinical translational)
  • $20,000-$40,000 USD per year
  • 1-2 years
  • Must be a NASS member.
Parkinson's research
  • $45,000 per year
  • Duration: 2 years
 
Clinical research, medical education research at the post-MD level, health systems research
  • $300,000 total (max $100,000 per year)
  • Duration: 3 years
  • Applicants must be a college of physicians & surgeons of Ontario licensed MD.
Scoliosis research
  • Up to $30,000 USD total
  • Duration: 2 year
  • Must have one SRS member as a co-investigator if not an SRS member.
Child health
  • $100,000 per year
  • Duration: 3 years
  • Must not hold operating grants totaling $500K or more.
Cancer research
  • $150,000 per year
  • Duration: 3 years
  • Must identify 2 mentors
