Vice-Principal Research New Faculty Orientation Event
Faculty who were hired from 2020 to 2023 are invited to a Faculty Orientation event on December 11, 2023. This in-person session will take place from 8:30am-5:30pm at the Donald Gordon Hotel & Conference Centre. This interactive session will feature a(n):
- Overview of the Vice-Principal Research Portfolio
- Synopsis about Tri-Agency funding: Why it matters, how we can help, etc.
- Discussion around starting your prizes and awards portfolio
- Conversation about building research partnerships locally, nationally and internationally
- Panel with selected faculty members reflecting on what they wish they knew when starting their research journeys at Queen’s

Call for Submissions: Bruce Mitchell Research Program
The Vice-Principal Research is pleased to accept applications to a university-wide call for submissions to enhance high-quality research training environments through support for new doctoral trainees to Queen’s. The Bruce Mitchell Research Program (BMRP) competition will provide a minimum of 50 doctoral trainees, through the selected faculty members, with $35,000 per year for four years. Submissions are due on December 15, 2023.
The Deputy Vice-Principal Research, Dr. Steven Smith hosted an information session for 70 participants on November 6, 2023. Dr. Smith provided a description of program goals and offered answers to faculty members’ questions. A recording of the session as well as are available on the Vice-Principal Research website.

Enhancing Low-Carbon Research at Queen‘s University
The nuclear research program at Queen’s will leverage new partnerships with the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited to support the transition to the low-carbon economy in Ontario and Canada. Queen’s signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the organizations to promote education and research around nuclear engineering research, led by the Reactor Materials Testing Laboratory and Dr. Mark Daymond (Mechanical and Materials Engineering). The partnership will shape Canada’s energy transition through the mobilization of research and technological innovation in academia, government and industry.

Dr. Howard Alper Visits Queen’s Researchers
Dr. Howard Alper, Companion of the Order of Canada and Distinguished University Professor, University of Ottawa, visited Queen’s recently, in his role as Chair of the Global Excellence Initiative canvassing committee. The Global Excellence Initiative, a program launched by former Governor General David Johnston in 2012, recognizes and elevates Canadian research talent on a global stage. The canvassing committee scouts emerging and established researchers of distinction and supports the development of prize and award strategy and package preparation.
The event at Queen’s consisted of a welcome breakfast with Associate Deans of Research, a session with research administrators as well as group and one-on-one meetings with early, mid- and senior career researchers including Canada Research Chairs and Black scholars. Dr. Alper encourages researchers to identify steppingstones to international recognition, through discipline, regional and national prizes and awards, and to develop awards strategies.
