Queen’s and Kingston recognize Black history

Black History Month events are taking place at Queen's and in Kingston throughout February. . Black History Month recognition and celebration events are underway across Queen’s and Kingston and are set to continue all February. An online opening ceremony on Jan. 31 marked the launch of a month-long calendar of virtual festivities highlighting Black arts, culture, history, and community.

Queen’s University in collaboration with are pleased to announce an exciting upcoming public art mural located on the Queen’s University Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) located at 284 Earl St, Kingston, ON. This large outdoor mural will be jointly commissioned by the student-led and the Office of the Principal. STEPS is partnering with Queen’s University to help organize this two-stage public art competition.

Three artists have been shortlisted and invited to virtually present their ideas and concepts to the Queen’s University community. During this virtual information session, Queen’s University community members will learn about the proposed artwork and provide feedback on their initial design and vision to help inform the final artwork they will submit for community consultation.

Presenting artists include:

  • is a visual artist based in Montreal with a playful practice that combines storytelling, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, performance, installation and microactivism. Her work investigates how people perceive, create and maintain their notions of self through behaviour and visual cues and is an ever-shifting visual mashup of British, Trinidadian and adopted Canadian cultural traditions.
  • is an interdisciplinary visual artist whose work draws attention to human-environmental relationalities. Lurch’s paintings and sculptures are conversations on infrastructures and the spaces and places we inhabit.
  • works across new media, street art and digital design. He is a founding member of mural collective MRLTM and new media collective Gathering.
