The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers many grants and awards for undergraduate student with excellent performance in German, Italian and Spanish courses.
The awards are given out to graduating students and to continuing students at the end of each academic year. The Department reviews student achievement and top students are selected to receive one (or more) of the scholarships, prizes and other merit-based awards. Students do not need to submit an application as these upper year awards are granted automatically by the Department. Students will be notified by the Student Awards Office if they have been selected for an award.
Departmental Medal (LLCU)
A medal is awarded annually by the University to the candidate graduating with an honours degree with A standing who is deemed by a Department of the Faculty of Arts & Science to have achieved the highest standing in a concentration offered by the Department. Only one candidate is nominated for a medal.
Languages, Literatures and Cultures Scholarship
Established in February 2004 by the Department of German and last revised in May 2020 by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering second, third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with an academic plan offered by the department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Elizabeth and Hilda Laird Scholarship in German
Established by Elizabeth B. Laird, B.A. '36, B.L.S. (Toronto) in memory of her cousin Hilda C. Laird, B.A. '18, B.L.S. (Pratt), Ph.D. (Cornell), who was Head of the Department of German at Queen's from 1947 to 1962. Awarded on the basis of high academic standing to a student entering the fourth year of an honours program in German.
Hilda C. Laird Prize in German
Founded by former associates and students to honour Professor Hilda C. Laird upon the occasion of her retirement, as an expression of gratitude and affection. Awarded to an outstanding student in German to be nominated by the Head of the Department.
Herbert F. Malcolm Award
Established by his son, John Malcolm, Arts 1953, in memory of Herbert F. Malcolm, B.Theol. 1926, and who registered with the Arts and Science class in 1925. Awarded annually to the student who has the most outstanding performance in second year German courses. The standing will be determined by averaging the marks obtained in two courses.
Susan Near Prize In German
Founded by the late Susan Near of Toronto. Awarded to the student who obtains the highest standing in any 6.0 units in GRMN at the 400-level.
The Wallace Near Prizes in German #1
Founded by the late W.W. Near, Esq. of Toronto. Awarded to the student who obtains the highest standing in 6.0 units in GRMN at the 300-level. The standing will be determined by averaging the marks obtained in two 3.0 unit courses.

Founded by the late W.W. Near, Esq. of Toronto. Awarded to the student who obtains the second highest standing in 6.0 units in GRMN at the 300-level. The standing will be determined by averaging the marks obtained in two 3.0 unit courses.

Awarded to the student graduating in a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) program with the highest standing in a major or medial concentration in Spanish.
The Garton Memorial Prize in Spanish Literature
Established by Mr. and Mrs. Clare J. Garton in memory of their daughter, Marilyn Eva, who graduated from 成人大片 in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree, and in 1973 with a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Education degree. Awarded to the student who has the highest standing in a third- or fourth-year course on Peninsular Spanish Literature, provided that the standing is first class.
The Harry W. Hilborn Memorial Prize in Spanish
Established by colleagues, friends and former students of Harry W. Hilborn, Professor of Spanish at Queen's from 1950 to 1970. Awarded to the student with a concentration in Spanish who has high standing in a course or a combination of courses at the 300 or 400 level in Spanish (excluding SPAN 301 and 302) provided that such standing is first class.
Garton Memorial Graduating Awards for Continuing Studies in Spanish
Established by Mr. and Mrs. Clare J. Garton in memory of their daughter, Marilyn Eva, who graduated from 成人大片 in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree, and in 1973 with a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Education degree. Awarded to a graduating student on the basis of academic excellence who has applied for continuing education in Spanish. Two awards are to be given: one for study in Latin America and one for study in Spain.
Loretta Johnson Scholarships in Spanish
Established by Eleanor Smith in honour of Mrs. Loretta Johnson, a former lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Italian, who retired in 1991 after 40 years of service. There are two scholarships to be awarded: one in SPAN P10 and SPAN 112 to the student who has the highest standing, provided the student has A standing and is proceeding to further studies in Spanish at Queen's in the following session.
Eleanor A. Smith Prize in Spanish
Established by Eleanor A. Smith and awarded to the student with the highest standing (provided that it is A standing) in a minor, medial or major concentration in Spanish who is returning from a third-year-abroad program at a Spanish-speaking university to complete the final year at Queen's.
Study Abroad Awards
The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers awards to students spending one or two semesters at a university abroad. The awards are given based on the academic excellence.

The Ernst Loeb Memorial Scholarship in German
Established by colleagues, students, and friends in memory of Ernst Loeb, much loved and respected professor at 成人大片 1970-1987, this scholarship is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department to a deserving student at the end of his or her second year who will spend the third year of a four-year Bachelor of Arts program with a major or medial concentration in German at a German-speaking university. The award will be made both on the basis of need and overall academic standing in German language and literature and other cognate courses taken at Queen's and is intended to encourage a greater understanding of the German culture to which Professor Ernst Loeb made such an outstanding contribution. -
The Jean Shields Sanders Scholarship in German
Established by Mrs. Joan Drabek (Arts 1952) of Vancouver in memory of her mother, Jean Shields Sanders (Arts 1914). Awarded annually at the end of the second year on the recommendation of the Department to an outstanding Canadian student who will spend the third year of a four-year Bachelor of Arts program with a major or medial concentration in German at a German-speaking university. All courses necessary for eligibility to spend the third year abroad for credit under departmental and faculty regulations must have been completed. The award will be made on the basis of high overall academic standing in German language and literature and other cognate courses taken at Queen's in both the first and second years and is intended to recognize exceptional promise in the discipline.

The Spanish & Italian Travel Bursary

The Garton Memorial Award for Study Abroad
Awarded to a student in either a minor, medial or major concentration in Spanish, with the highest overall average, who will study abroad and acquire transfer credits in Spanish. One or two awards are to be given, with preference given to study in Latin American and/or Spain.
Queen's Exchange Bursary
All students participating in a Queen's formal exchange are eligible for an Exchange Bursary.
