The following bursaries and awards have been made available thanks to the generosity of Queen's donors.


Atkinson Family Admission Bursary

Established in January 2024 by Leah and Paul Atkinson Family Foundation and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students entering first year of any first-entry undergraduate degree program. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards. 

Catherine E. Abbott Little Entrance Bursary

Established by a bequest from the estate of Catharine E. Abbott Little and awarded on the basis of financial need to students entering the first year of any undergraduate program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Preference will be given to Indigenous students.

Grace Adelia Ashbaugh Bursary  

Established in January 1991 by the Estate of Frederick K. Ashbaugh and last revised in July 2023. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students entering first year of any first-entry undergraduate degree program. The award is renewable for three subsequent years provided a satisfactory academic average is maintained each year and students remain enrolled in full-time study. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.

Alumni Association Bursaries

Established by the Alumni Association and awarded on the basis of financial need to incoming students in undergraduate and bachelor degree-level professional programs at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Renewable over the normal length of the academic program if financial need remains evident.

May and Murray Ball Bursary 

Established in September 1994 by the Estate of May Ball, BA (Hons) 1925, in memory of her brother, Murray. Last revised in July 2023. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students entering first year of any first-entry undergraduate degree program. The award is renewable for three subsequent years provided a satisfactory academic average is maintained each year and students remain enrolled in full-time study.  Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.

AMS Indigenous Student Award

Established in 1990 by the Alma Mater Society of ³ÉÈË´óƬ and awarded annually to Indigenous students entering first year in any faculty or school at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. If no entering students are eligible the awards could go to upper-year Indigenous students. In the event of no eligible applicant, this award can be given to any student in financial need. Selection is based on academic standing and/or financial need.

Balder Entrance Award

Established in 1997 in memory of Gunnar Edstrand (1908-1979) and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic excellence to a student entering the first year of any undergraduate program.

John Brooks Awards

Established in recognition of the achievements of the John Brooks Community Foundation and Scholarship Fund and awarded to students entering any undergraduate program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. To be eligible, a student must have a combination of financial need, high academic standing, and involvement in school and/or community activities. Preference will be given to students who have been involved in the work of the John Brooks Community Foundation. Selection will be made by the Senate Scholarship Committee on the recommendation of the John Brooks Community Foundation and Scholarship Fund.

Beatrice Bryce Memorial Bursary

Established in April 1988 by family, colleagues, friends, and former students of the late Beatrice Bryce (BA (University of Toronto)), Dean of Women at ³ÉÈË´óƬ from 1959 to 1971, and a member of the Department of English. Last revised in September 2023. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of any Faculty or School at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards. 

George L. Cooke Admission Award

Established in February 2013 by friends and colleagues in honour of George L. Cooke, BA(Hons) 1975, MBA 1977. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students entering first year of any first entry undergraduate degree program. Preference will be given to students whose parent(s) or grandparent(s) are working in the Canadian Insurance Industry.

Julia (Gameela) David Admission Award

Established in October 2019 by the Estate of Laura David, B.A. 1948, in memory of her mother, Julia (Gameela) David. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students entering first year of any first entry undergraduate degree program.

Robert L. Dunsmore Admission Bursary

Established in January 1991 by the Estate of Robert L. Dunsmore and last revised in July 2023. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students entering first year of any first-entry undergraduate degree program. The award is renewable for 3 subsequent years provided a satisfactory academic average is maintained each year and students remain enrolled in full-time study. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.

Guang-Hua Admission Bursary

Established in March 2017 in memory of Mr. HUI Oi-Chow, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents entering first year of any first entry undergraduate degree program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. First preference will be given to students who self-identify as former citizens of China or Hong Kong. Second preference will be given to students who are the first generation in their families to attend a post-secondary institution.

Herbert J. Hamilton Memorial Alumni Association Bursaries

Established by the Alumni Association in memory of Herbert J. Hamilton, B. A. '31, HLL .d. '75, also known as Mr. Queen's, the Director of Alumni Affairs, Counselor to the AMS, and for almost 40 years, the editor of the Alumni Review. In 1987 he was elected Honorary Life President of the Alumni Association. Awarded on the basis of financial need to a student entering the first year of any degree program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Renewable for a further three years if financial need remains evident.

Betty Harrison Awards for Black Canadian Students

Established in February 2018 by the Estate of Ester Margaret (Betty) Harrison and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to Black Canadian students (Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada) entering first year of any first entry undergraduate degree program. The award is renewable for 3 subsequent years provided a satisfactory academic average is maintained each year and financial need remains evident. To maximize the use of available funding, annual awards may be granted on the basis of demonstrated financial need to black students enrolled in any year of any Faculty or School at ³ÉÈË´óƬ.

Betty Harrison Awards for Visible Minority/Racialized Students

Established in February 2018 by the Estate of Ester Margaret (Betty) Harrison and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to visible minority/racialized students entering first year of any first entry undergraduate degree program. The award is renewable for 3 subsequent years provided a satisfactory academic average is maintained each year and financial need remains evident. To maximize the use of available funding, annual awards may be granted on the basis of demonstrated financial need to visible minority/racialized students enrolled in any year of any Faculty or School at ³ÉÈË´óƬ.

Palmer Hoar Memorial Bursary

Established in April 1976 by family in memory of Palmer Hoar (BA, MA), an outstanding graduate in Economics of ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Last revised in September 2023. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of any degree program. Preference will be given to students enrolled in an academic plan offered by the Department of Economics. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.

Stephen J. Hobbs Bursary

Established in February 1981 by family and friends in memory of Stephen John Hobbs, a Physical and Health Education student until his death in May 1979. Last revised in September 2023. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of any Faculty or School at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.

Lindsay Dale Hudson Memorial Award

Established in September 2017 by Queen's Professor Dr. Robert W. Hudson and Marie Nicole Florent, BA 1988, MPA 2001, LLM 2006, in memory of their daughter Lindsay Dale Hudson. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated financial need to students entering first year of any first entry undergraduate degree program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Preference will be given to students in the following order of priority: (a) Indigenous students from Nunavut; (b) Indigenous students from the Yukon or the Northwest Territories; (c) Indigenous students from elsewhere in Canada; (d) students who are residents of Nunavut, Yukon or Northwest Territories. Selection will be made by the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards, as delegated by the Senate Committee on Scholarships and Student Aid.

Kingston Community Award

Established in May 2009 by corporations in the Kingston community and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students entering the first year of any first entry undergraduate degree program. The recipients must be graduates of a secondary school in one of the counties of either Lennox and Addington, Frontenac, Leeds and Grenville, or Prince Edward.

Laudanski Family Bursary

Established in June 2022 by friends and family in memory of Stanley and Florence Laudanski, the proud parents and grandparents of Queen’s University graduates Gerald Laudanski, BCom 1981, James Laudanski, BSc 1978, and Annemarie Laudanski BSc 2011. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of any Faculty or School at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Preference will be given to students enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Applied Science degree program. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.

Dr. Malcolm D. Kinsella and Ruth Kinsella Memorial Award

Established by Peggy Kinsella in memory of her father, Malcolm D. Kinsella, MD 1912, and sister, Ruth Kinsella, B. A. 1946. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need to full-time students entering the first year of any undergraduate program.

Evelyne Laishley, Arts '35 Entrance Award

Established in July 2004 by Evelyne Laishley, Arts '35, and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to students entering the first year of any direct entry undergraduate program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. The award is renewable for up to three years provided a minimum GPA of 2.0 (C) is maintained each year and financial need remains evident.

Marsha Lampman Alumni Association Bursaries

Established by a bequest from Marsha Lampman, B. A. (Hon.) '74, dedicated alumna volunteer and benefactor, and donations from alumni volunteers. Awarded to an undergraduate student entering the first year in any faculty or school on the basis of financial need and outstanding leadership in extracurricular activities. The bursaries are renewable for three years provided satisfactory academic standing has been maintained and financial need remains apparent.

Greg LeBlanc Entrance Award

Established in October 2004 by Greg LeBlanc, B. A. 1973, and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to a student entering the first year of any direct entry undergraduate program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. The award is renewable provided a GPA of 2.0 is maintained and financial need remains evident.

Lesley Family Entrance Award

Established in October 2006 by a bequest from the estate of Anne Lesley, B.A. 1971, and awarded on the basis of financial need to students entering first year of any direct-entry undergraduate program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. The award is renewable for the second, third, and fourth year, provided a GPA of 2.0 is maintained and financial need remains evident.

Dr. Wycliffe Lofters Memorial Award 

Established in November 2022 by friends and colleagues in memory of Dr. Wycliffe Lofters. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement, and involvement in and/or contribution to the African or Caribbean communities in Canada to students entering first year of any first entry undergraduate degree program. 

Madge Diversity Bursary

Established in December 2020 by Stacey Madge, BCom 1993, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students entering first year of any first entry undergraduate degree program. Preference will be given to students who self-identify as Indigenous, Black Canadians or Visible Minority/Racialized students.

R. Kenneth and Catherine Matheson Carty Award

Established by Donald J. Carty, B. A. 1968, and awarded annually to full-time students entering any four year undergraduate program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, superior academic ability, proven leadership qualities, creative thinking, and evidence of entrepreneurial spirit.

Pathways to Education Award

Established in April 2011 by Queen’s University and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students entering first year of any first entry undergraduate degree program who are graduates of the Pathways to Education Program. The award is renewable for three subsequent years provided a satisfactory grade point average is maintained each year and financial need remains evident.

Alfie Pierce Admission Award

Established in May 2001 and revised in September 2018 by the Afro-Caribe Community Foundation of Kingston with donations from friends and colleagues of the Foundation. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement and involvement in and/or contribution to the African or Caribbean communities in Canada to students entering first year of any first entry undergraduate degree program.

Queen's Access Award

Established in January 2023 by ³ÉÈË´óƬ.  Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students entering first year of any first-entry undergraduate degree program. The award is renewable for three subsequent years provided a satisfactory academic average is maintained each year and students remain enrolled in full-time study.  

Queen's First Generation Bursary

Established in September 2017 by the Ontario Government and revised in February 2021. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to Ontario students in any year of any first entry undergraduate degree program in any Faculty or School at ³ÉÈË´óƬ who are the first in their family to attend postsecondary education.

Sceptre Investment Counsel Limited Award

Established by Sceptre Investment Counsel Limited and is awarded to a student entering the first year of any undergraduate degree program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. Leadership and community contribution are also considered.

Elizabeth Shortt Memorial Alumni Association Bursaries

Established by the Alumni Association in memory of Elizabeth Shortt, M.D. 1884, the first President of the Alumnae Association, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student entering the first year of any degree program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Renewable for a further three years if financial need remains evident.

John B. Stirling Bursary 

Established in April 1991 by Pat McNally and Joe McNally to honour John Bertram Stirling, Chancellor of Queen's from 1958 to 1974. Last revised in July 2023. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students entering first year of any first-entry undergraduate degree program. The award is renewable for three subsequent years provided a satisfactory academic average is maintained each year and students remain enrolled in full-time study.  Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.

Ann Eliza Stafford Bursary

Established in 1927 by T.T. Bower, MBE in memory of his mother, Ann Eliza Stafford (1847-88). Last revised in September 2023. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of any Faculty or School at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.

Robert Sutherland - Harry Jerome Entrance Award

Established in April 2008 by ³ÉÈË´óƬ, in cooperation with Black Business and Professional Association (BBPA) and the Harry Jerome Scholarship program to honour Robert Sutherland (BA, 1852), the first person of African heritage to graduate from ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Awarded to black students entering the first year of any direct-entry undergraduate degree program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement and contribution to the black community or other volunteer activities. The award will be renewable for three years provided a satisfactory academic average has been maintained each year and financial need remains evident.

Robert Sutherland Memorial Admission Award

Established in May 2001 and revised in September 2018 by the Afro-Caribe Community Foundation of Kingston with donations from friends and colleagues of the Foundation.  Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement and involvement in and/or contribution to the African or Caribbean communities in Canada to students entering first year of any first entry undergraduate degree program.

Robert Sweezey Memorial Alumni Association Bursaries

Established by the Alumni Association in memory of Robert O. Sweezey, B. Sc.(Eng.) 1908, the first President of the Alumni Association, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student entering the first year of any degree program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Renewable for a further three years if financial need remains evident.

Tripp/Smith Family Entrance Award

Established by Eric Clifton Tripp and Maria Louise Smith, who have always recognized the importance of education, and value the fundamental and community learning which takes place at an institution such as ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Awarded to a full-time student entering the first year of any undergraduate program on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.

Allan R. Taylor International Study Award

Established in February 1996 in honour of Allan R. Taylor. Last revised in October 2023. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year who have been selected to attend Bader College. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.

Michael and Susan Woeller Entrance Award

Established in September 2006 by Michael Woeller, M.B.A. 1978, and Susan Woeller (Butler) B.A. (Hons.) 1973, B.Ed. 1975, and awarded on the basis of financial need and demonstrated leadership experience to students entering the first year of any direct entry undergraduate program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ.
