Named General Bursaries

If you are selected to receive a General Bursary the name of your bursary may be amended to a named general bursary.

  • Only the name of your award will change; the value of your General Bursary assistance will not change depending on the name of the award

Eligible students will also be considered for named general bursaries open to students in any faculty or school.

Aish Award

Established in February 2004 by Dr. Arlene Aish and last revised in June 2022. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in fourth year of a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree program in the Faculty of Health Sciences at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. 

Marion Sarah Barr Memorial Bursary

Established November 1993 by Major General J.W.B. Barr in memory of his wife Captain (Matron) Marion S. Barr, ARCC, R.N. and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in the final year of the Bachelor of Nursing Science program. The candidate will be a caring individual who puts the needs of the patient first.

Roger and Dana Beaman Award 

Established in November 2023 by Roger Beaman, JD 1971, and Dana Beaman. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year of a Bachelor of Nursing degree program in the School of Nursing in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.

The terms for this award are cross listed with named General Bursaries, Engineering and Applied Science.

John Brooks Crowe "Pioneer" Memorial Bursary

Established with funds donated by Ian H. Birch, B.Sc. Engineering '37, and his wife Margrethe J. Crowe, P.H.N., to acknowledge contributions and efforts of the Crowe family who were pioneers in Community and Public Health Services. The family wishes to encourage students to continue in this field by awarding a bursary based on demonstrated financial need to a student in fourth year of the Bachelor of Nursing Science program, enrolled in NURS 405 Community Health Nursing.

Dame Sylvia Burkinshaw D.St.J., R.N., Award

Established in April 2012 by the Estate of Sylvia M. Burkinshaw, BA 1989, MPA 1992, D.St.J., R.N., and St. John Ambulance Loyalist Branch. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in second, third or fourth year of the School of Nursing at ³ÉÈË´óƬ.

Dr. Heather Clarke Nursing Bursary

Established in May 2013 by Heather F. Clarke, B.N.Sc. 1966, M.N., Ph.D. (Washington) and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year in the School of Nursing in the Faculty of Health Sciences, with preference given to Canadian Indigenous students (First Nations, Inuit or Metis).

Ivy Clifton Macdonald Bursary in Nursing

Established by Barbara S. McPhee in memory of her mother, Ivy Clifton Macdonald. Awarded on the basis of financial need to an upper year student in the School of Nursing.

Nancy Coxford Nursing Award

Established in September 2018 by Nancy Coxford, B.A. 1977, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year of a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ.

Albert and Anne Francis Foundation Award

Established in February 2011 by The Albert and Anne Francis Foundation and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Nursing Science program.

Rotha Lynne Groom Memorial Bursary

Established by classmates and friends in memory of Rotha Lynne Groom, B.N.Sc., 1973. Awarded annually on the basis of merit and need to a student enrolled in the third year of the nursing program.

Ruth Jerrett Award in Nursing

Established in May 2001 in memory of Ruth Jerrett, by her daughter Mary Jerrett, B.N., M.Sc., Ed.D., and awarded to an undergraduate student in the School of Nursing in the Faculty of Health Sciences on the basis of financial need and a sound academic record. Preference will be given to third year students.

Mary A. Keillor Memorial Bursary

Established in October 1990 by friends and colleagues in memory of Mary A. Keillor, a counsellor and confidant of many nursing students and a member of the administrative staff in the School of Nursing from 1973 to 1983. Awarded on the basis of financial need to students in any year in the School of Nursing.

Lori Selkirk Lord Award in Nursing

Established in November 2019 by Lori Selkirk Lord, BNSc 1977, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in the first year of the Bachelor of Nursing Science Accelerated Standing Track Program in the Faculty of Health Sciences.  The award is renewable for 1 subsequent year provided a satisfactory academic average is maintained each year and financial need remains evident.

Victor Gok Leung Lee Memorial Award

The terms for this award are cross listed with named General Bursaries, Arts and Science, Biology.

Nancy Malloy Memorial Award

Established in memory of Nancy Malloy, B.N.Sc., by her friends and classmates from the Kingston General Hospital (class of 1968) and ³ÉÈË´óƬ (Nursing Science 1969) to commemorate her dedication and enthusiasm to international nursing. Nancy was a medical relief worker for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Chechyna at the time of her death in December 1996. Awarded on the basis of financial need to a full-time upper year student in the B.N.Sc. program or in a graduate program in nursing, who has demonstrated an interest in international nursing. If there are no eligible candidates the award may be granted in the following order: (a) to a full-time upper year student in the B.N.Sc. program or in a graduate program in nursing, who has demonstrated an interest in practicing in a remote area of Canada; (b) to a full-time upper year student in the B.N.Sc. program or in a graduate program in nursing. Students should apply on the Queen's General Bursary application and submit a letter, outlining interest in the above areas, to the Associate University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards).

Genna McLinden Memorial Award

Established in April 1997 by family and friends to honour the memory of Genna McLinden, B.N.Sc. '96, R.N., who died tragically in a car accident while travelling to Ottawa to begin her nursing career. Awarded to a graduating student in the School of Nursing who has shown a dedication to the nursing discipline while maintaining a happy and encouraging nature toward others, has an improved academic standing, and demonstrates financial need. Selection will be made by the School of Nursing in consultation with Financial Aid and Awards.

McPar Nursing Bursary

Established in November 2022 by Ann McClure, BNSc 1966, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in second, third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree program in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Preference will be given to Indigenous students. 

Nursing 1984 Bursary

Established in November 2010 by members of the class of Nursing 1984 and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to undergraduate students in any year of the School of Nursing at ³ÉÈË´óƬ

Nursing 1999 Award

Established in January 2013 by the class of Nursing 1999 and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to undergraduate students in any year of the School of Nursing, with preference given to students in fourth year.

Nursing Placement Award

Established from alumni donations to provide financial assistance to undergraduate nursing students to travel to their clinical placements.  Awarded to students on the basis of financial need.  Bursary application to be submitted to the Associate University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards) by 31 October.

John Puxty Studies in Aging Memorial Bursary

The terms for this award are cross listed with named General Bursaries, School of Medicine.

Major James H. Rattray Bursary

Memorial trust fund awarded to students enrolled in the nursing program on the basis of financial need. Awarded on the recommendation of the School of Nursing.

Phyllis Mary Robinson Bursary

Established in February 2018 by Joy Patrick, BNSc 1970, in memory of Phyllis Mary Robinson, dedicated teacher of nursing students for many years. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to undergraduate or graduate students in any year of a degree program in the School of Nursing in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Rocklein Reconciliation Nursing Bursary

Established in December 2020 by Katharine Kemplin (née Rocklein), BNSc 2001, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of any degree program in the School of Nursing in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Preference will be given to students who self-identify as Indigenous, Black Canadians or Visible Minority/Racialized students.

Rutherford-Noel Family Award

Established in December 2008 by Isobel Rutherford, M.D. 1957, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year of study in the Faculty of Health Sciences at ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Preference will be given to students from Lambton County, Ontario.

School of Nursing 25th Reunion Award

Established in March 1999 by the Class of Nursing Science 1969 on the occasion of their 25th reunion and revised in June 2015. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to a student in any year of the Bachelor of Nursing program in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Preference will be given to students in the Advanced Standing Track.

School of Nursing 75th Anniversary Bursary

Established in June 2018 with donations made to the School of Nursing and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree program in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

School of Nursing Undergraduate Bursary

Established in October 2015 by the School of Nursing and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to undergraduate students in any year of the School of Nursing in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Eva Steacy Award

Established by Robert J. Steacy, B.Com. 1973, in honour of his mother, Eva Steacy, and awarded to students enrolled in a four-year Bachelor of Nursing Science program in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Awarded on the basis of financial need, a record of academic achievement, demonstrated leadership ability and involvement in extra-curricular activities or community services.

Hilda Alexina Tait-Rice Bursary

Established by her husband and family in celebration of the life of Hilda Alexina Tait-Rice whose compassionate love spilled over the boundaries of her home touching friends and neighbors, the members of the congregation of St. Margaret's Church, residents of Rideaucrest Home, and patients of the Kingston Cancer Clinic. The bursary is intended to assist a student in financial need who is preparing for a career in nursing, either undergraduate or graduate, and who has a demonstrated interest in continuing care of persons with cancer or serving seniors in the community. Kim van Steenbergen (Nursing 1978) Award

Established in October 2019 by Kim van Steenbergen, BNSc 1978, and Jeff van Steenbergen, BSc (Honours) 1977, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree program at ³ÉÈË´óƬ.

Barbara Vance Bursary in Nursing

Established in December 2002 by Mrs. Edna Vance and awarded on the basis of financial need to second-, third- or fourth-year students registered in the School of Nursing in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
