The tradition of recognizing outstanding teaching achievements began almost 40 years ago. In fact, the oldest teaching award at Queen鈥檚 started as a student initiative and was first presented by the Engineering Society in 1972. This student based organization recognized the importance of teaching to student learning and to scholarship in higher education and was instrumental in setting the stage for teaching recognition at Queen鈥檚 as we know it today.
Today, Faculties and departments offer a wide array of internal teaching awards. Awards are currently offered by the Faculty of Arts & Science, Smith Engineering, the Smith School of Business, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Health Sciences, the School of Nursing, the School of Rehabilitation Therapy, and the Faculty of Law. However, new awards can be created depending on the needs of individual units. Internal Awards by Student Organizations Several student led clubs, societies, and organizations recognize excellence in teaching at Queen鈥檚. For instance, the Engineering Society currently offers three awards including: Educational Excellence Teaching Assistant Award, the Golden Apple Award, and the Golden Pillar Award. The Mechanical Engineering Club offers the Silver Wrench and the Brown Wrench awards.
