Principal and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Deane hosted a gathering with local leaders at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts on Sept. 28 where he shared updates about Queen’s strategy and how the university is working to deepen relationships with community members through meaningful partnerships and a collaborative, shared vision for the future.

Dear Members of the Queen’s Community,

Like so many of you, I have watched with horror the events unfolding in Iran. The latest attacks by Iranian police on students protesting at Tehran’s Sharif University have brought this matter even closer to home. For several weeks, the world has watched as brave citizens have taken to the streets after the senseless death of a young woman at the hands of an oppressive regime. They have used their voices to challenge and criticize sexism, inequity, violence and abuse.

Academic regalia (the fancy gown and hat) is not something Principal Patrick Deane wears often save for convocation and a few other special events, but he recently took his gown across the Atlantic to wear at the anniversary signing ceremony of the Magna Charta Universitatum (MCU).

Principal Patrick Deane has determined the membership of a committee to advise him on the appointment of a permanent replacement to fill the position of Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic). The search for the new Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) is already underway. The committee will begin its work immediately.

Sept. 30 marks Canada’s second annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR). Throughout the month, the Queen’s community will honour the day with several commemorative events, learning opportunities, and cultural activities taking place across campus — culminating with a public Sacred Fire Ceremony on Sept. 30.

Queen’s hosted leaders of the Matariki Network of Universities (MNU) this week for a two-day itinerary of discussions covering research collaborations, educational and professional development, and the network’s priorities for the next five years.

Founded in 2010, the MNU is global group of leading universities recognized as leading, research-intensive institutions providing high-quality student experience and focused on international impact. The event marked the group’s first in-person visit in two years.

With her late husband Alfred (BSc’45, BA’46, MSc’47, LLD’86), Isabel Bader (LLD ’07), transformed Queen’s University in many ways, from its physical campus to the educational opportunities it offered its students.

In receiving “GII-IKIDONAANIWAN - IT HAS BEEN SAID,” the report of First Peoples Group on Indigenous identity, Queen’s accepted the principle that a new process for confirming claims to Indigenous identity is needed when future employment considerations require Indigenous representation. This third party, external report reflects the opinions of community members that engaged in the dialogue process run by the First Peoples Group and the recommendations as presented were developed in light of that qualitative undertaking.
