Hiya everyone!
My name is Valerie, and I just came back from my full year exchange at the University of St Andrews in beautiful Scotland!
Running separately from the Bilateral Exchange Program, the St Andrews Exchange sends 4 students on scholarship for a full year at St Andrews. The application can seem a bit daunting, but I can guarantee it is worth the effort, as this becomes an incredibly unique experience traveling to a very small town of only 18,000 people, and working to become a true and active member of the St Andrews community. Unlike many other schools, St Andrews really does foster this 鈥渂ubble鈥 of a tightknit academic and social community amongst students and the townies. While there is a divide, since there isn鈥檛 really a campus, the university buildings and faculties are truly embedded into the town in every way possible.
Being in such a small town, you will always bump into familiar faces and learn about opportunities that wait for you at every corner. From joining athletics, to writing for magazines and journals, there is a place for you in St Andrews 鈥 even if that鈥檚 on the beach! St Andrews has 3 lovely beaches, and a beautiful pier. Along with some farms, and neighboring venues, balls, events, and bonfires are constantly happening, so don鈥檛 worry about missing one, as another will definitely be in the cards soon.
Now be warned, St Andrews is a bit of a trek to other towns, one of the closest nearby being Dundee, which is about 30 minutes on the bus. Getting to the airport can be a hassle, but do not let this deter you! How I see it, you will become an expert traveler by the end and only gain more skills for your toolbelt, while navigating the Scottish busses and trains. I was fortunate enough to visit 21 countries this past year, but this also included my summer, where I was able to backpack for a month, and work in England as well. Make sure to check the terms on your visas, and if the opportunity presents itself, I would highly recommend considering looking into working or staying past your exchange if possible. However, the St Andrews term is very similar to Queen鈥檚, going from September-May, so you can definitely be back in time for the Canadian spring and summer as well.
Remember that exchange is entirely the experience that you make it to be, and even those that may be going to the same school as you will all have wildly different experiences and takeaways, so don鈥檛 let anyone influence you, and don鈥檛 be afraid to branch off and explore the world the way you want to. This is your chance to take control and meet people, go to places you never thought you would, and make connections that will last a lifetime.
This is the most exciting time! Enjoy and embrace it!!
