Please join us for Dr. Stein's talk, entitled "Queering the U.S. Bicentennial: Patriots, Protesters, Pornographers, and Profiteers." This event marks LGBTQ History Month, brought to you by the Department of History EDII Committee.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, this presentation looks back to the U.S. bicentennial of 1976, focusing on the queer bromance between U.S. President Richard Nixon and Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo, LGBTQ activists who participated in counter-bicentennial protests, Mandate magazine鈥檚 special issue on the bicentennial, and the multiple meanings of Elton John鈥檚 鈥淧hiladelphia Freedom.鈥

Marc Stein is the Jamie and Phyllis Pasker Professor of U.S. History and Constitutional Law at San Francisco State University. He is the author of five books on LGBTQ history, including The Stonewall Riots (2019), Queer Public History (2022), and Rethinking the Gay and Lesbian Movement (2023). Stein is also director of the OutHistory website, coeditor of the Queer Pasts digital history database, vice president of the Organization of American Historians, and one of the founders of the Sexuality Studies Program at York University.
