In this masterclass, Dr. Chris Cotton will introduce students to the study of economics, a field that brings together critical thinking and rigorous analysis to develop a better understanding of the world and to uncover hidden complexities in government policy, business strategy, and individual decisions. Drawing on student and faculty projects from the Queen’s Economics Department, the session showcases cutting-edge tools like economic modeling, statistics, machine learning, and game theory that empower us to challenge conventional wisdom and make smarter decisions. We will discuss two counterintuitive case studies, exploring how a tax increase could reduce government revenue, and considering whether paying students increases student performance.
