I am an international student from Iceland and completed my bachelor's degree in history at the University of Iceland in 2019. I completed my master鈥檚 degree at Queen鈥檚 University in the summer of 2021 and am now a second year Ph.D. student. In my bachelor thesis I researched Iceland's position regarding the NATO military intervention in the Libyan civil war in 2011. There I explored how Iceland, a country with no military, became an active participant in the Libyan civil war as a NATO member, and how that lead to severe tension in Iceland's coalition government at the time. In my master鈥檚 cognate I explored the Allied occupation of Iceland in the Second World War with particular emphasis on Canada鈥檚 role in the occupation under the supervision of Dr. Allan English. In my Ph.D. work I am exploring Canada鈥檚 participation in the occupation with regards to Icelandic social history of the Second World War. I am particularly researching the Canadian soldiers who were stationed in Iceland, their projects, pastimes, and relationships with Icelanders. In my free time I enjoy hiking, travelling, cooking, and playing guitar.
