François Lamoureux is a Ph. D. candidate at Queen’s University under the supervision of Caroline-Isabelle Caron. His research focuses on specific monuments of the Montréal landscape. He is particularly interested in the power dynamics between official commemorative rituals and counter-uses of the space, and how long-lasting vernacular usages are negotiated. With the focus set on the power of symbolism in urban spaces, his ongoing work often bridges social history and historical geography, highlighting the parallels between historical research, storytelling, and community living. Parallel to his Ph. D., François has worked and published on tourism in Montréal, and he is preparing an oral history project focusing on sociability and storytelling in one of Montréal’s Parc Jeanne-Mance’s most lasting improvised sport community.
