Fran莽ois Lamoureux is a Ph. D. candidate at Queen鈥檚 University under the supervision of Caroline-Isabelle Caron. His research focuses on specific monuments of the Montr茅al landscape. He is particularly interested in the power dynamics between official commemorative rituals and counter-uses of the space, and how long-lasting vernacular usages are negotiated. With the focus set on the power of symbolism in urban spaces, his ongoing work often bridges social history and historical geography, highlighting the parallels between historical research, storytelling, and community living. Parallel to his Ph. D., Fran莽ois has worked and published on tourism in Montr茅al, and he is preparing an oral history project focusing on sociability and storytelling in one of Montr茅al鈥檚 Parc Jeanne-Mance鈥檚 most lasting improvised sport community.
