I am interested in the history of popular music criticism, American youth culture, New Journalism and the New Left in the United States during the postwar era. My thesis focuses on The New Yorker鈥檚 first rock music critic Ellen Willis鈥檚 column in the magazine between 1968 and 1975. In my current research, I am examining the primary role of rock music on Willis鈥檚 radical feminism, the influence of her writing on The New Yorker鈥檚 politics during the late 1960s and early 1970s, and more broadly, the political foundations of rock criticism during this period.
