This seminar considers topics relevant to the colonial (16th-18th c.), Indigenous Andean worlds of Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador. The course is geared toward students who do not have a specialization in Latin American history, but who are interested in broadening their understanding of this area of the world and Indigenous cultures. Topics of consideration include Inca notions of sovereignty, Indigenous responses to the Spanish invasion, aspects of material culture, notions of history, forms of religious expression, female labour, and rebellions.
