This course, a sequel to History 251 (Medieval England 450-1485) is intended as a general survey of English, and to a lesser extent Scottish, Irish and Welsh, history insofar as they affected English history, from the “Wars of the Roses” (not a term used by contemporaries) to the Glorious Revolution at the end of the seventeenth century. The scope of the course is broad, and it will introduce the student to the main currents of social, economic, political and cultural history during the period. Instruction will be by a combination of large lecture and smaller tutorial groups conducted by the course graduate Teaching Assistants. Please note that attendance will be taken in both lectures and tutorials and will comprise a significant portion of the grade. Students will also complete weekly quizzes. The balance of assessment will be in the form of short writing assignments and take-home tests.
