Vol 7 No 2 (2020): Special Issue: Whiteness in the Age of White Rage鈥擳he Canadian Context
This Special Issue鈥斺淲hiteness in the Age of White Rage鈥濃攏ames and interrogates what is implicit in anti-racist, Indigenous, and whiteness studies: white rage. Guest Editors Katerina Deliovsky and Tamari Kitossa provide an excellent Introduction to this Special Issue, elaborating on how contemporaneously, historically, and theoretically a vital dimension of the configuration of whiteness in Canada is the normalization of rage as a property right of whiteness. In their respective papers, contributors Dallas Jokic, Delia Douglas, Laura Mudde, and Shelina Kassam point to the various ways that white rage is cloaked in policies and quotidian practices, uncloaked in murderous acts of white rage, and sometimes upheld by racial Others. By expounding on the epistemological relevance of white rage as a deeply entrenched aspect of Canadian culture, this Special Issue contributes to the existing body of critical inquiry that supports resistance to colonialism and white supremacy in Canada. In addition, the review of Jonathan Metzl鈥檚 (2019) Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America's Heartland by Sarah Smith offers an intriguing reflection on the boomerang effect of white people鈥檚 commitment to white rage.
