On November 9th, we will be getting together at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre to celebrate three beautiful books and the writers and poets who are working to expand black worlds on Queen's campus and beyond.

Sadiqa de Meijer has written the poetry collections Leaving Howe Island and The Outer Wards, and the language memoir alfabet/alphabet. Her work, which often explores themes of landscape, language, migration, medicine, and spirituality, was awarded the CBC Poetry Prize, Arc's Poem of the Year award, and a Governor General's Literary Award, and has been published in Poetry Magazine, the Walrus, Brick Magazine, and Poetry London. Darby Minott Bradford is a poet and translator based in Tio鈥檛ia:ke (Montreal). They are the author of Dream of No One but Myself (Brick Books, 2021), which won the A.M. Klein Prize for Poetry, was longlisted for the Grand Prix du livre de Montr茅al, and was a finalist for the Griffin Poetry Prize, Governor General鈥檚 Literary Awards, and Gerard Lampert Memorial Award. House Within a House by Nicholas Dawson, Bradford's first translation, was published in 2023 by Brick Books. Bottom Rail on Top is their second book. | |
Otoniya Juliane: Song & Dread is 鈥渞ife with the paradoxical forces of boredom and intensity, when the early days of COVID-19 passed under an inescapable pall鈥. Otoniya Juliane is an assistant professor of Black Studies here at Queen鈥檚 University. She is joint appointed in English and Gender Studies. She is also the author of 100 Days and A is for Acholi. | |
Born and raised in Kingston, Ontario, Britta Badour, better known as Britta B., is an award-winning artist, public speaker, professor, and poet living in Toronto. She curates an annual showcase called Soundtracks & Stanzas presented by Toronto International Festival of Authors and is an active advisor for organizations like Prologue Arts and League of Canadian Poets. Britta holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of Guelph and teaches spoken word performance at Seneca College. Earlier this year, on World Poetry Day, she celebrated the release of her first book of poetry, Wires That Sputter, published by McClelland & Stewart in Canada and the U.S. which is also available as an audiobook. |
