Principal and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Deane has published Queen’s Bicentennial Vision: A Discussion Paper—to begin a campus-wide conversation about how the university can ensure a prosperous and meaningful future as it approaches its 200th year in 2041. 

“As we approach the university’s bicentennial, we are invited to reflect on the enduring strength and purpose of our university,” says Principal Deane. “As we contend with significant financial pressures and changing societal needs, we have a responsibility to adapt to the realities of our time while staying true to the values that define us. In that spirit, I invite you to join me in a community-wide discussion on where we want our university to be in 2041.” 

The discussion paper highlights the values, strengths, and history that define Queen’s, examines our shifting educational needs and demographic trends, and explores strategic opportunities to ensure Queen’s remains a leader in research, teaching, and community engagement. 

Its release marks the start of a consultation period that is set to include both online and in-person engagement opportunities for Queen’s community members over the coming months. 

The discussion paper is available for review on the Principal’s Office website, where members of the Queen’s community are encouraged to share their thoughts, ideas, and responses. 

In the coming months, faculty, staff, students, and alumni will have more opportunities to share perspectives and engage on the bicentennial vision in a series of town halls and focused discussions. Dates will be announced as they are scheduled. 

A draft bicentennial vision, reflecting the consultation process and broader university community discussion, will be posted for further comment later this year.
