It鈥檚 the time of the academic term when students are looking ahead to summer employment, preparing to choose their majors, or anticipating graduation and the beginning of their careers. As students engage with these important decisions, Career Services in Student Affairs wants to empower them with a new online guide that helps them chart a path that aligns with their values, gives their work personal meaning, and connects them to a larger vision.
Unique to Queen鈥檚, the is designed to recommend personal, meaningful action students can take towards advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Its holistic approach allows students to explore immediate actions to take, including student clubs, volunteer opportunities, and electives, as well as mapping out longer-term career paths and professional development goals. The guide is already being used across campus with students in various classes and workshops.
鈥淯sing the Guide, students were able to identify areas of interest, access resources, and think creatively about how to craft career pathways that would lead to having the kind of social impact that matters most to each of them,鈥 says Cheryl Cline, Associate Professor, Queen's Health Sciences. 鈥淢y hope is that, not only the students in our course, but every graduating student at Queen鈥檚 will have an opportunity to explore their career options using this important new resource.鈥
March is SDG Month. During a new on March 5, students were guided through a series of exercises to identify the ways in which they are already supporting the UN SDGs and envision new possibilities through meaningful work. The workshop is designed to inspire hope and purpose, as participants discover how they can make a social impact through their careers, and cultivate optimism for a better future.
鈥淭he Queen鈥檚 UN SDG Career Guide has been an invaluable resource in helping me align my career aspirations with my commitment to community development,鈥 says Sindhu H D, a third-year economics student in the Faculty of Arts and Science. 鈥淎s a student passionate about education, economic growth, and sustainability, this guide helped me identify career pathways that integrate my interests with meaningful social impact.鈥
For a window into how Queen鈥檚 alumni are driving meaningful change in their careers aligned with the UN SDGs, students are encouraged to register for the March 26 , co-hosted with the Office of the Principal. The discussion offers an opportunity to hear alumni鈥檚 inspiring stories, gain insights into their professional journeys, and learn practical strategies for creating social impact through your own career. Students can then connect with alumni, fellow attendees, and professionals passionate about impactful work.
The Queen鈥檚 community is invited to visit the Queen鈥檚 SDG Month Canada calendar for events and activities.
