After more than two decades with Queen’s Health Sciences, faculty clinician Michael Green has accepted the position of President, Vice-Chancellor, Dean, and CEO of the NOSM University. An expert in family medicine, rural and Indigenous health, and health policy, Dr. Green will bring a wealth of experience to the role, which he is set to begin on Nov. 1, 2024. 

“Dr. Green is a fantastic leader and is well-positioned to take on this role with NOSM University,” says Dr. Jane Philpott, Dean, Queen’s Health Sciences. “While he will be greatly missed, I have no doubt that he will be successful in driving the university’s mission around social accountability and advocacy for health equity.” 

Dr. Green joined Queen’s in 2003, having previously worked as a family physician in Moose Factory and Kashechewan, as well as having earned his master’s in public health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. 

In July 2017, Dr. Green was appointed as the Brian Hennen Chair and Head of Queen’s Department of Family Medicine. He has served as Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences and was the inaugural Clinical Teachers Association of Queen’s University Chair in Applied Health Economics and Health Policy. He also served as Director of the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research, and Interim Director of the Health Services and Policy Research Institute (HSPRI). 

Beyond his roles at Queen’s, Dr. Green is a Senior Adjunct Scientist with the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES). He was elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2018 and has been a valued member of several professional and government expert committees, including the Ontario Expert Panel on Wait Times in Primary Care, the Advisory Committee on Ontario’s Immunization System Review, the College of Family Physicians of Canada Indigenous Health Working Group, and many others. In 2023, he was elected the 70th President of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. 

At NOSM University, he will lead their mission to improve health for Northern Ontarians, including rural, remote, Indigenous and Francophone communities across the region.
