Celebrating research prize and award winners

Vice-Principal (Research), Nancy Ross, addressing 成人大片 research leaders. Dr. Ross was awarded the 2023 Melinda S. Meade Distinguished Scholarship Award in Health and Medical Geography from the American Association of Geographers.
On Tuesday, March 5, award-winning Queen鈥檚 researchers gathered at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts to celebrate the achievements of their peers at Applause: A Celebration of Research Excellence. Hosted by the Vice-Principal Research portfolio, the event recognized the accomplishments of 80 scholars who, from 2021 to 2023, were the recipients of 99 national and international prizes and awards for their research and scholarship.
Cao Thang Dinh (Chemical Engineering), won the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year, in the Engineering and Technology category.
Principal Patrick Deane welcomed Queen鈥檚 research award recipients.
Principal Patrick Deane and Vice-Principal (Research) Nancy Ross, alongside award recipients John Smol (Biology), Praveen Jain (Electrical Engineering), and Cathleen Crudden (Chemistry), shared inspiring words on the importance of the awards in helping to support research advancement, student and faculty recruitment, and in building global profile for the researcher, their research program, and Queen鈥檚.
Praveen Jain (Electrical and Computer Engineering) was awarded the Killam Prize, one of Canada鈥檚 most competitive research honours, from the National Killam Program.
Nomusa Mngoma (School of Rehabilitation Therapy and Department of Medicine), with her family. She was the recipient of the BE-STEMM 2022 Award for Research Excellence in Epidemiology & Population Health.
The event also provided an opportunity for colleagues and families to come together to celebrate the role that research and scholarship play in expanding our understanding of the world, facilitating the cross-transfer of knowledge, technology, and expertise, and ultimately enhancing societal good.

Dr. Smol was recognized for his lifetime achievements with the Vega Medal, a Nobel Prize-equivalent in geography, awarded by the King of Sweden. Dr. Crudden received the 2023 NSERC Polanyi Award, one of the funding agency's highest honours.
Sara Nabil (School of Computing), was the recipient of the 2022 Canadian Human-Computer Communications Society (CHCSS) Early Career Research Award.
