November 28 - Well, it seems that Peter has prevailed!

Two figurines in a boat

After an intensive season of Survivor 鈥 Discipleship Edition, students made their final choice between Simon Peter and John son of Zebedee. In keeping with Jesus鈥 own decision (according to Matthew!) and almost two thousand years of tradition, Peter will retain the 鈥渒eys to the kingdom鈥 and his position as the top disciple.

Thanks to the students of RELS 214 for playing along!

Students in Professor Richard Ascough's RELS 214 The New Testament spent the term deciding whether or not Peter should really get the keys to the Kingdom, like Matthew records (Matt 16:15-19). They played "Survivor - Disciple Edition." They had 12 disciples of Jesus in a boat, and only one of them could have the keys to the Kingdom. Each week students voted 1 "out" of the boat. Who would it be? Students got to decide!

Their task: Look up the disciples of Jesus - Who are they? What did they do? Why are they worthy of the keys? Why are they not worthy? Students came to class prepared to nominate one of the disciples to be removed from the boat and they had to give reasons - why should this guy go and others remain?

The following disciples were removed:

  • Judas (for obvious reasons)
  • Simon the Zealot (for being radical)
  • Thomas (for the doubting)
  • Bartholomew/Nathaniel (for questioning the value of Nazareth)
  • Matthew (for tax collecting)
  • Thaddeus/Jude (for nationalist leanings)
  • James "the Younger", son of Alphaeus (for being Thaddeus' brother)
  • Philip (for not being a brother)
  • Andrew (for being "meh")
  • James, son of Zebedee (for not being John or Peter)
  • John, son of Zebedee (for not being Peter)

And in the end, this disciple remained:

  • Peter
