Queen鈥檚 University has committed itself to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples in this country. Members of Queen鈥檚 School of Religion are taking an active role in this process. Drs. Bill Morrow and Valerie Michaelson recently organized an event responding to the call of Canada鈥檚 Truth and Reconciliation Commission for the repeal of section 43 of the Criminal Code, a law that currently protects the use of corporal punishment as a means of child discipline. Their aim was to develop a joint Theological Statement that could be used by Canadian churches to urge the government to repeal section 43. This is especially appropriate in the Queen鈥檚 context given its origins as a college that prepared ministers for the church, and its long association with the former Queen鈥檚 Theological College. As Principal Woolf noted in a letter to conference participants, it is quite likely that graduates of Queen鈥檚 participated in the Residential School system. For more information, .
