The Association contributes to four bursaries and awards annually.
Providing financial assistance to women pursuing a Queen's degree was a primary focus of the Faculty Women's Club. Until the 1990s, the FWC collected, managed, and donated funds directly. For instance, the Residence Bursary was initiated in 1953 to assist a female student with her residence fees. In 1954, the Club set up a Residence Bursary from the proceeds of a very successful tea. Annually, amounts of $50 - $150 were made available to the Dean of Women, the Registrar, and at times, the Padr茅, to assist women in meeting their residence fees. In the late 1990s, this responsibility was given to the Student Awards Office and the Ban Righ Centre. The QWA continues to make an annual donation to these funds and encourages members to make .
Bursaries and Awards
Elizabeth Wallace Bursary (FWC President, 1939-43 and 1944-50)
This bursary is named after the original Faculty Women鈥檚 Club founding president, wife of former Principal R.C. Wallace, and awarded on the basis of financial need to student(s) in their first year of study at the University. In 1967, this fund was renamed the Elizabeth Wallace Bursary to recognize the valuable contributions Mrs. Wallace made to the Club. It is worthy of note that in 1977, Miss Colleen Purdon, a recipient of the Elizabeth Wallace Bursary, was the guest speaker at the Club's annual dinner meeting. This bursary is awarded to a mature woman in need returning to study at Queen鈥檚. It is offered and administered through the Ban Righ Foundation.
Alice Corry Bursary (Honorary President, 1961-68)
The Alice Corry Bursary was established to mark our 60th anniversary and to honour Alice Corry, a charter and life member of the Club, Honorary President since 1961, and wife of former Principal Corry. The Alice Corry Graduate Bursary is to be awarded annually to a woman pursuing a doctoral degree in Education.
Pauline Schubert Bursary (FWC President, 1974-75)
This bursary given is awarded in memory of the late Pauline Schubert, a former President of the Faculty Women's Club. This bursary is awarded to assist a female student in need of financial assistance. It is administered by the Student Awards Office.
Stephanie Deutsch Award (Honorary President, 1968-74)
Established in December 2005 to mark the QWA's 65th anniversary and honour Stephanie Deutsch (McGill, Business, 1939), honorary President of the original Faculty Women鈥檚 Club (1968-74), and wife of the late Dr. John Deutsch, former Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Queen鈥檚 University. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to female student(s) in the second, third or fourth year of a Bachelor鈥檚 of Commerce degree program.
