This team is dedicated to providing resources and guidance for students who are making this important transition.

What is the Off-Campus Living Advisor?
The Off-Campus Living Advisor (OCLA) is part of the Community Housing team, under Housing and Ancillary Services and provides all Queen’s University students with guidance and resources for navigating the Kingston rental market. The OCLA participates and coordinates events, creates and distributes educational materials, and provides direct one-on-one support for undergraduate, graduate, international, and exchange students to educate and support with searching for housing, applications, lease agreements, tenant rights and responsibilities, housemate conflicts, and being a part of the Kingston community.
The Off-Campus Living Advisor is searching for 3-6 student staff who will work directly with the team.
Time Commitment: October 10, 2024, to April 30th,2025 5-10 hours a week, approximately 7 months.
The successful candidates will be responsible for supporting and assisting with the educational initiatives of the Off-Campus Living Advisor for students living Off-Campus. In addition, the Off-Campus Student Support will provide opportunities for their student peers living Off-Campus by offering peer to peer support, and programming with the goal of making stronger connections, increase their sense of belonging and commitment to Queen’s University and the City of Kingston.
As an Off-Campus Student Support, you will also be responsible for the following duties:
- Develop and implement outreach strategies for connecting with students living off campus.
- Research a variety of safety topics and best approaches to educate students.
- Assist with outreach initiatives to the Off-Campus student population.
- Assist with the coordination, development and distribution of proactive educational materials regarding searching for housing, applications, lease agreements, tenant rights and responsibilities, housemate conflicts, and being a part of the Kingston community.
- Assist with presentations to students currently living in residence and planning to move Off-Campus and provide them with an overview of navigating the Kingston rental market
- Assist with outreach to campus and community groups and organizations to explore potential partnership opportunities.
- Assist with the implementation, development and distribution of marketing and promotional materials, including print and electronic communications (e.g. posters, social media, brochures).
- Assist with the development of educational modules for other areas within Housing and Ancillary Services
- Other duties as required.
Reporting to the Off-Campus Living Advisor, you will be part of the Community Housing team. This position provides the successful candidates the opportunity to learn more about Student Affairs, while developing their presentation, communication, research and educational/outreach programming skills.
Required Qualifications:
- Queen’s University Student currently living Off-Campus for a minimum of 1 year or has lived Off-Campus in Kingston for a minimum of 1 school year while attending Queen’s.
- Have a passion for working with fellow students and has a keen interest in outreach and in developing educational programming for their fellow student peers.
- Have an interest in educational programming regarding Off-Campus living and navigating the Kingston rental market
- Have an interest in helping students living off campus make stronger connections with their peers and getting connected to the city as a member of the Kingston Community.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Works well independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrate intercultural competence and has a knowledge of equity, diversity and inclusion principles.
- Time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative.
- Willingness to work flexible hours as required (adjusted hours to accommodate evening and weekend initiatives may be required).
- Preferred Qualifications in addition to the required qualifications, it would be ideal if candidates possessed the following assets:
- Excellent knowledge of Social Media platforms.
- Experience working with local community organizations.
- Familiarity with graphic design software.
- Have experience planning and implementing outreach strategies and educational programming.
