On Thursday, August 3, 2023, we received news of the escalating tensions within the Amhara region. We write to express our utmost concern and care for the Ethiopian students in our Queen鈥檚 community, our colleagues at the University of Gondar, Ethiopian Queen's alumni and all others in the Amhara region, who are facing the impact of this developing conflict.
Our collaborative efforts with the University of Gondar (UoG) and the Mastercard Foundation have been instrumental in advancing inclusive higher education for young people with disabilities, establishing a new occupational therapy program, and conducting research for inclusive education and community-based rehabilitation in the region. We greatly value the ongoing work and commitment that faculty, students, and staff at Queen鈥檚 and the UoG have contributed to this program.
At 成人大片, we will closely monitor the situation as it unfolds, and will update the Vice-Provost, Global Engagement鈥檚 website with any action we can take to assist those impacted.
Through the , the university will continue to contact directly international students and new Canadians who also have family and strong ties to the region to provide information, resources, and guidance. All students can turn to supports and resources offered by Queen鈥檚 and campus groups. Student Wellness Services has expanded mental health services and weekly student wellness groups, and students can also access support at the . Faith and Spiritual Life also offers multi-faith, non-judgmental support. 24/7 crisis support and counselling is available to undergraduate and MBA students through the app; Graduate students can access 24/7 crisis support and counselling through Empower Me. is another 24/7 phone service available to all postsecondary students in Ontario.
