Dr. James received his M.Sc. from Dalhousie University in Oceanography, Ph.D. from McGill University in Geology, and was a Post-doctoral Fellow and Assistant Professor at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami. Before coming to Queen's, he was a Professor of Earth Sciences at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. James devotes much of his research to understanding the origin of carbonate rocks, principally by investigating modern environments of deposition and applying the concepts learned to the older rock record. These investigations are a combination of field study, sedimentology, marine geology, stratigraphy, petrography, paleontology, and geochemistry. The scope is global with current projects in Australia, South America, The Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, and Bermuda.
