Search begins for Queen鈥檚 next provost

The search for Queen鈥檚 University鈥檚 next provost and vice-principal (academic) is underway as an , established and chaired by Principal Daniel Woolf, begins the recruitment process.

Alan Harrison was appointed Queen鈥檚 first provost and vice-principal (academic) in 2011, following an exhaustive international search. His term ends on July 31, 2016. The position was previously filled on an interim basis by Robert Silverman.

鈥淚 appointed Alan Harrison as our Provost because, apart from his many other skills and experience at other institutions, he had expertise in the kind of activity-based budgeting that I believe is important for the university鈥檚 progress. At the time of his appointment, Dr. Harrison indicated to me that he would serve only one term,鈥 says Daniel Woolf, Principal and Vice-Chancellor. 鈥淗is success in implementing the new budget model has helped the university align its financial decision-making with its academic priorities and I am extremely grateful for both his work and his counsel.鈥

The advisory selection committee has retained Boyden global executive search, a firm with considerable experience in recruiting academic leaders, to assist in the search process. A has been posted on the university鈥檚 website.

鈥淭he provost plays a key role at Queen鈥檚, acting as the university鈥檚 chief academic, operating and budget officer,鈥 says Principal Woolf. 鈥淥ver the coming months, the committee will undertake an extensive search process to advise me on the best candidate to fill this important position.鈥

The provost has responsibility for the university鈥檚 academic programs and budget, and plays a central role in implementing the principal鈥檚 strategic priorities. The advisory selection committee includes representation from Queen鈥檚 faculty, staff, students, Senate and the Board of Trustees, and aims to have the next provost in office by Aug. 1, 2016.
