The Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, will visit Queen’s University on Monday, Sept. 26 to deliver the Duncan G. Sinclair Lecture in Health Policy.

The speech, presented by the Queen’s School of Policy Studies, along with the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research, will take place at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts, beginning at 5:30 pm.

“The Sinclair lecture is a seminal annual event at Queen’s, providing a forum for discussion of critical health policy issues that inform our students, faculty, staff, alumni and community,” says David Walker, Executive Director and Stauffer-Dunning Chair of Policy Studies and a professor of emergency and family medicine in the Queen`s School of Medicine. “We are delighted that Minister Philpott will be the Sinclair Lecturer for 2016.”

Minister Philpott was elected as Member of Parliament for Markham-Stouffville – and appointed as Minister of Health – in 2015. Prior to entering politics, she was a family physician and was active in causes such as public health policy, medical education and global advocacy for HIV/AIDS. She studied medicine at the University of Western Ontario, completed her family medicine residency at the University of Ottawa and a Tropical Medicine fellowship in Toronto, and holds a Master of Public Health.

“This lectureship is one of many ways Queen’s can play an important role in Canada’s public policy dialogue,’ says Dr. Walker. “By hosting distinguished guest lecturers such as Minister Philpott, we are providing our students – the next generation of Canadian policy minds and future health professionals – with the opportunity to learn from the leaders of today. Queen’s is already fortunate to have significant expertise in a range of important policy areas and, as we continue to examine and redefine our role in the policy landscape, broadening our ties with the wider public landscape will only serve to strengthen Queen’s role in this field.”

The Duncan G. Sinclair Lecture in Health Policy is named in recognition of Queen’s emeritus professor Duncan Sinclair’s lifetime of service and leadership in Canadian medicine and medical education. The inaugural lecture, held in 1999, featured guest speaker Dr. David Naylor, Dean of Medicine at the University of Toronto and, in the years since, has featured such distinguished guests as Dr. Samir Sinha, columnist Jeffrey Simpson and former Minister of Citizenship & Immigration and Minister of National Revenue, the Honourable Elinor Caplan.
