Jane Philpott has announced that she will not be seeking a second term as Dean of Queen’s Health Sciences (QHS) following the conclusion of her first term on June 30, 2025.

“It has been a huge honour to serve as dean since July 2020, and I intend to continue in this role until the end of my five-year term,” says Dean Philpott. “Then it will be time for me to pass the baton to a new leader while I continue my work on health policy and health systems in other ways.”

Since taking on the role in 2020, Dean Philpott has led several projects and initiatives that have made an impact at Queen’s and beyond.

This year, she led the creation of a new admissions process that improves equitable access to the faculty’s MD program, and in 2023 she led the expansion of a partnership with the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) to launch a program to prepare Indigenous students for healthcare careers, with support from the Mastercard Foundation.

Under her leadership, the faculty developed an innovative educational and training to address ongoing physician shortages in southeastern Ontario.

Dean Philpott’s achievements align with a created in 2021. The plan prioritizes interdisciplinary research; integrated health sciences education and clinical impact in the community; equity, diversity, inclusion, Indigeneity, and accessibility; and a healthy organizational culture.

“Dean Philpott has been a visionary leader for Queen’s Health Sciences, and the broader university community has benefitted significantly from her innovative approach and passionate commitment to healthcare, health sciences education and research,” says Patrick Deane, Principal and Vice-Chancellor. “Although we are sorry that she is leaving us next year, we know Dean Philpott will continue to lead the faculty with the same dedication she has always shown. We are grateful for her service.”

Details on a search process for a new QHS Dean will be shared by the Office of the Provost and Vice-Principal Academic at a future date.
