Group seeks input on university-wide learning outcomes

The Queen鈥檚-specific Learning Outcomes Working Group is seeking input from the university community as it works to identify a set of learning outcomes that reflects the distinctiveness of a Queen鈥檚 education.

Learning outcomes are statements of the skills or knowledge that students should develop during their studies.

鈥淚ntegrating learning outcomes into curricula has been shown to be among the key drivers of successful student learning, and it鈥檚 one of the ways that Queen鈥檚 is working to enhance its student learning experience,鈥 says Jill Scott, Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning) and chair of the working group. 鈥淨ueen鈥檚 already uses learning outcomes at the course, program and degree levels, but we have not yet articulated the fundamental skills associated with a Queen鈥檚 education, regardless of the discipline of study.鈥

Over the coming weeks, the working group will undertake consultations across the university, including focus groups, surveys, and meetings with groups like faculty boards and the Alma Mater Society (AMS).

Two focus groups are currently planned and are open to all interested students, staff and faculty members. One will be held on April 29 from 3-4:30 pm, and another on May 1 from 9-10:30 am. To participate, simply .

鈥淲e want to know what the Queen鈥檚 community thinks are the essential outcomes of a Queen鈥檚 education and how they might set us apart from other universities,鈥 says Dr. Scott. 鈥淏y identifying university-wide learning outcomes, such as critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills, we will be in a position to assess the university鈥檚 effectiveness at instilling those skills. It will also help identify where resources are needed to enhance those outcomes and support our graduates鈥 success in their careers or future studies.鈥

After the first round of consultations, the working group will prepare a proposed list of Queen鈥檚 learning outcomes. After seeking further comment from the Queen鈥檚 community, those learning outcomes will be brought forward for consideration and approval by the Senate Committee on Academic Development and Senate.

鈥淚n addition to looking at outcomes of traditional classroom learning, the process will also allow us to discover ways that student-driven opportunities in the broader learning environment are at the core of a Queen鈥檚 education,鈥 says Colin Zarzour, AMS Academic Affairs Commissioner and a member of the working group. 鈥淭he working group looks forward to hearing from students and all members of the Queen鈥檚 community.鈥
