With the return of university sports, the Gazette provides a roundup of Queen’s Gaels teams in action over the weekend.

FOOTBALL

The Gaels took down their longtime rival McGill 38-24 in exhibition play at Richardson Stadium, renewing one of Canadian football’s oldest rivalries.

A Gaels turnover in the opening minutes of the first quarter saw McGill convert the field goal, but Queen’s quickly responded as quarterback Nate Hobbs connected with receiver Connor Weir, and after a successful convert by Nick Liberatore, for a 7-3 lead over the Redmen.

In the second quarter Zac Sauer forced a fumble and James Donald recovered the ball and was brought down on theMcGill four-yard line. From there, Hobbs hooked up with Matteo Del Brocco to make it 14-3. After McGill scored their first touchdown, the Gaels stacked up a pair of one-run scores from Marquis Richards and Jake Puskas and went into the half with a 31-17 lead.

After the break backup Queen’s quarterback Kyle Gouveia scored on a quarterback sneak late in the third, giving Queen's a 38-17 lead. The Redmen tacked on another score in the fourth to bring the game to a 38-24 final in favour of the home side.

The Gaels open their OUA season on Saturday, Aug. 26 against the Carleton Ravens at Richardson Stadium. Kickoff is 1 pm.

SOCCER

Both the Queen’s women’s and men’s soccer teams traveled to London for the annual Old Four tournament where they faced Western, Toronto and McGill. Both teams played their opener Saturday against Toronto and both were able to come away with victories to advance to Sunday’s finals.

The women picked up first half goals from first-year players Taylor Green and Alex Doane for an early advantage. In the second half veteran striker Jenny Wolever potted a pair of strikes to seal the 4-0 victory over Toronto. 

On the men's side Briam Lopez struck for the Gaels early before Toronto was able to find an equalizer just before half. After both sides went scoreless from there, a winner was decided in penalties where the Gaels came out on top 5-4, with Zachary Toupin netting the winner.

On Sunday, the Gaels captured the women’s title with a 1-0 over Western as Jenny Wolever scored her third goal of the weekend in the 67^th minute. Alanna Richardson got the start in net and picked up a clean sheet victory.

On the men’s side the Gaels fell 2-1 to Western. The Mustangs opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the 45th minute then extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second half. The Gaels got on the board with a penalty kick of their own by Kyle Owens but were unable to find the equalizer.

Both Gaels teams open their OUA regular season at home to Laurentian on Saturday Sept. 2 at Richardson Stadium. The women’s game starts at noon with the men following at 2:15 pm.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Queen’s men’s basketball team got an early start to their exhibition schedule, welcoming the NCAA’s Canisius Golden Griffins to the Athletics and Recreation Centre on Saturday. The visitors earned an 87-71 win.

Quinton Gray paced the Gaels with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists. Jaz Bains, another Gaels newcomer, had 15 points. Returning to action after missing 2016-17 due to injury Mike Shoveller had 15 points with seven rebounds.

Queen’s held the lead for the majority of the opening half but the Golden Griffins made a strong second half push to take control. Jermaine Crumpton had 11 of his 18 points in the second half for Canisius.
