Flags on campus currently lowered in will remain lowered for Roger Browse, a faculty member in the Queen鈥檚 School of Computing. Dr. Browse died on July 18 after a long illness.
Dr. Browse joined the Queen鈥檚 School of Computing (then the Department of Computing and Information Science) shortly after receiving his PhD from the University of British Columbia in 1982. He quickly established himself as a recognized expert in artificial intelligence, computer vision, and robotics.
In 1984, he founded the school鈥檚 cognitive science undergraduate program, believed to be the first such program in the world, combining computer science, psychology, philosophy, linguistics and neuroscience. Over the years, Dr. Browse remained the program鈥檚 main architect, passionate advocate and indefatigable promoter. He served as its co-ordinator, principal instructor and dedicated student advisor.
