Throughout this week, the Queen’s University Muslim Student Association (QUMSA) is hosting a series of events aimed at fostering connections within the Queen’s community.

As part of Islamic Awareness Week (March 6-10), QUMSA members are putting up posters and displays, meeting with their peers, and answering questions about the Islamic faith and the wide range of cultures.

It’s an opportunity to be seen and to clear up any misconceptions, says QUMSA chair Hachem Camara (Sc’17), an international student from Mauritania.

“This event is meant to educate people, especially students on campus, about what is Islam and what is the value of Islam,” he says. “We’re not trying to convert people to Islam or trying to convince them that this is the only religion they should believe in. We are trying to help people understand that this is what Islam is and this is what Islam teaches and introducing them to Muslim people in general.”

Each day activities, such as information sessions and trying on a hijab, are being held in Mackintosh-Corry Hall (9 am-6 pm). Also a series of talks are being held at Dunning Hall or the Biosciences Complex (6:30-8 pm) with speakers including Queen’s faculty, chaplains and imams.
