The university’s inaugural Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Coordinator will join Queen’s on May 24.

Barbara Lotan’s office will be the central point of contact for students, staff and faculty, and will coordinate campus wide-education, response, support, training and prevention initiatives. The office will be housed within Queen’s Human Rights and Equity Office.

 “I am pleased with the progress we have made to date in addressing, and responding to, the important issue of sexual violence,” says Provost Alan Harrison, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic)   “We welcome Ms. Lotan to this new role. The university has also enhanced the profile of its support services on and off campus, introduced new education programming for students, and developed new resources and training for students, staff and faculty.”

Ms. Lotan has been engaged in a variety of prevention and intervention activities throughout Eastern Ontario and has worked collaboratively with community stakeholders, including other service providers, to assist clients as they navigate support systems. Ms. Lotan’s experience with the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Program at the Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital provided her with an opportunity to be actively involved in all aspects of the program, including direct service delivery and program management.

Ms. Lotan has worked as a Child and Youth Worker with the Upper Canada District School Board, a Program and Public Education Coordinator with the Lanark County Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence Program, a Public Education Coordinator with the Tri-County Sexual Behaviour Program in Lanark, Leeds & Grenville Task Forces, and also a Police Constable. She is currently completing a Master of Arts Degree in Conflict Studies at Saint Paul University in Ottawa.

The establishment of this position, which followed a recommendation in the , is an outcome of the work undertaken by an , which has been prioritizing the working group’s recommendations and setting timelines for next steps.
