Media Advisory: Nobel Prize winning economist to speak at Queen鈥檚 public lecture series

Nobel prize winning Queen鈥檚 alumnus and economist  is the featured speaker at the 2024 W.A Mackintosh lecture. Dr. Card will speak about cause and effect and evidence-based policies. The theme of how to measure the cause and effect of important economic and social policies will be explored, through discussion around topics such as whether a raise in minimum wages reduces the number of jobs on offer, and if increased immigration lowers job opportunities for workers.

Dr. Card is available for media interviews immediately following the lecture from 5:30-6pm, Friday, September 20, or the morning of Saturday, September 21.

The WA Mackintosh lecture (named after former faculty member and Queen鈥檚 Principal WA Mackintosh) is an annual event which has been organized by the Queen鈥檚 Economics Department for over 20 years. It has featured eminent researchers in economics from across the globe, including Nobel laureates, World Bank Chief Economists as well as Presidents of the Canadian, American and European Economics Associations. Geared towards students, faculty and community members, the lecture usually addresses economics issues of significance for a broad swath of society.
