A campus memorial is planned for Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Fourteen emergency blue lights around the Queen’s University campus have been adorned with white ribbons featuring the name of a victim from the Montreal Massacre, a local victim of gender-based violence and a violence statistic.

“It seems like violence in the community and in the country are perhaps perceived as a non-issue over the years,” says Anne-Marie Grondin, Executive Assistant, Society of Graduate and Professional Students. “There were two new incidents of sexual assaults in Kingston just last week. We have definitely not solved the problem. We are doing this to remind people about these issues.”

The Queen’s memorial and candlelight vigil has been organized to commemorate the 14 women murdered at the Ecole Polytechnique in 1989 and also to honour all the women who live with and have died as a result of gender-based violence.

The event will take place at the John Deutsch University Centre in Wallace Hall on the second floor on Thursday, December 6 at 6 pm.
