The university recently hosted a reception to honour the Loran Scholars who attend Queen’s. Principal Daniel Woolf, alumni and Loran Scholar mentors also attended the event.

Each year the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation selects up to 30 Loran Scholars from a pool of 3,700 applicants from across Canada based on a mix of academic achievement, extracurricular activity and leadership potential. The program provides students with a tuition waiver and a living stipend. Seven of 30 Loran Scholars named in 2013 selected Queen's for their post-secondary education. They join 13 other Queen's students who received Loran Scholarships in previous years.

Loran Scholars also receive personal and professional development opportunities. During the four years of their undergraduate program, Loran Scholars participate in enterprise-related summer employment, a professional development experience (often an international volunteer experience) and an opportunity in a public policy environment. The program also connects the Loran Scholars with a mentor for the duration of their undergraduate studies. The mentors are generally individuals who are influential in communities, government or various areas of disciplines.
