A new Indigenous Studies minor in the Faculty of Arts and Science will be officially launched at an event on Tuesday, September 17 at the Four Directions Aboriginal Student Centre.

The minor is part of the new Indigenous Studies degree plan, , which offers students in the Faculty of Arts and Science the ability to pursue Indigenous Studies as either a minor in combination with any major, or as a stand-alone area of study in a three-year degree.

“The new Indigenous Studies degree plan will provide students with an opportunity to broaden their understanding of Canadian and world Aboriginal cultures and histories,” says Gordon Smith, Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts and Science. “It will be of great interest and benefit to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students alike.”

The Indigenous Studies minor is hosted by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, but it contains course offerings from across the Faculty of Arts and Science. Students must take 10 courses to complete the minor, with two required courses in Aboriginal Studies and the remainder from a wide, multidisciplinary range of elective courses including Indigenous literature, Indigenous Latin American art, ethnobotany and First Nations Politics.

The Queen’s community is invited to attend the launch of the Indigenous Studies minor at the , 146 Barrie Street, at noon on Tuesday, September 17. Light refreshments will be served.
