Introduction to Writing Fantasy: Reimagining Fairey & Folk Tales

In this multi-genre course students will read and consider fairy tales and folktales from across the world as well as contemporary literary interpretations/adaptations of fairy tales and folklore as springboards for their own creative writing. This cross-genre course will encourage students to try their hands at poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, YA, and children's books, graphic novels, and any other creative writing genre that interests them. This generative course where students will be expected to write in a wide variety of genres, though their final project will concentrate on a genre of their choosing.

  • Fiction submission (20%)
  • Creative non-fiction submission (20%)
  • Presentation on a non-European fairy tale (10%)  
  • Final Portfolio (30%)
