In this course students will be introduced to reading writing and editing poetry as an embodied practice. Classes will include discussions of poetics and analysis of poems by established poets to gain an understanding of basic components and techniques such as imagery metaphor rhythm form and sound. Some attention will also go to introducing students to a wide array of poetic styles and movements across different historical and geographical sites though time limitations demand that such necessary knowledge of one鈥檚 art will be informed by each student鈥檚 own motivation. Students will be expected to write poems each week in line with the designated themes or techniques and the largest component of class will be workshops in which students will give and receive feedback on their work in a respectful manner. These poems and the editorial suggestions from the instructor and peers will form the basis for each student鈥檚 final portfolio.
Readings
Different poems will be presented in line with each week鈥檚 focus and drawn from an anthology accessible by all students or else supplied by the instructor.
A core text detailing different aspects of poetics will also be assigned.
