James was born on Feb. 13, 1929 in Regina and died peacefully on May 31, 2023 at St. Peter's Hospital in Hamilton with Patricia, his beloved wife of 42 years, by his side.

James was predeceased by his parents, William Barnett Harrison and Francys Ruth Harrison (Sunstrom); his brother, J. Eugene R. Harrison; his first wife, Margaret Barclay Harrison (McJannet). 

He was father of Jeanne Harrison (Eric), Lauchlan Harrison (Laura), Francys Harrison (David), Christopher Harrison (Alison), and Penelope Harrison; grandfather to Sarah Willman (Dennis), Sophie Harrison-Saxe (Anthony), Louis Harrison-Saxe (Khala), Janice Theodoropoulos (Joey), Ian Harrison (Justeen), Jemma Harrison (Adam), William Harrison, Thomas Harrison; and great-grandfather to Tristan, Leo and Evelyn Willman, Audry and Hazel Saxe-Cameron, Anna and June Saxe, and James Theodoropoulos.

James did his earliest schooling in Flin Flon, but the onset of the First World War brought James to Toronto, where he and Gene Harrison (brother) attended Pickering College. He went to Med School at Queen's. He married Margaret McJannet on May 18, 1951.

James managed to cram a lot into the following decades. He got a baby girl, a medical license and a plane ticket to Korea. James served a year with Canada's Peacekeepers and returned to a posting in Halifax. James and Margaret had three more kids, before going to Cold Lake. On the return to Kingston, Marg and their five kids took the train. 

The road trip back to Esquimalt with five active kids in a Rambler station wagon was legendary. As a physician and administrator in the Canadian Air Force, he had many postings in Canada throughout his 40-year career. Making the journey back to Kingston in 1970 with seven people in two cars was second nature for the family. The family loaded up the cars and all the gear needed for a six day glamping trip — all James had to do was sit back and drive without the veins popping out in his neck.

In the 60s and 70s, James became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada - specialist internal medicine. James was, by then, a Lt. Colonel and Hospital Commandant of CFB Kingston. He was also teaching at Queen's and Marg went to St. Lawrence College. In 1972, he purchased a sports car — I'm not sure what came first, the Red Datsun 240-Z or the mid-life crisis.

The Peacekeeping tour in ‘75 to Egypt gave James and Margaret the space to work through a marriage separation. The reconciliation was unsuccessful and when James returned, Marg stayed in Kingston with Penelope. He went to Winnipeg with Francys and Christopher, where he was Command Surgeon for Air Command HQ and a full Colonel. James met Patricia K. McDonald (CDR, NC, USN Ret.) at a conference in the Spring of '79 and married Pat in Annapolis, MD, on Aug. 28, 1981.

James and Pat moved from Winnipeg to Ottawa in 1982, where he was director, medical treatment service. After four years at National Defense HQ, James retired to Hamilton and enjoyed a scholarly life with books, computer programs, music, and hosting annual family wine tours. He wintered in Isle of Palms, SC, at Pat's beautiful beach home — a magnet for family of every generation. For 32 years, Jim and Pat lived in Lauchlan’s house. James' keen, gentle interest was a steady force on his grandchildren to their lasting delight and lasting gratitude.

James was a gentleman. As dementia robbed his memory and ability, his humour remained resolutely cheerful and untouched. When he couldn't remember the years in Hamilton, Lauchlan explained that he'd lived in this house for three decades and the white car parked outside was his. In darker periods after watching TV news, James would “receive” orders to a new dangerous front, and he would become agitated about another move. Patricia would tell him he “received orders” to stand down. He was to stay home. Other officers now had the duty to take up the orders and keep the family safe. Goodbye James. Godspeed and fare thee well.

Cathie passed away peacefully in Kingston on July 19, 2023, in her 82nd year. She leaves her husband of 57 years and best friend, Donald (Arts’64, LLM’66); her son, Ian (LLM’02) and his wife, Chrissie Yao (Artsci’93); her son, Colin and his wife, Heather; her grandchildren: Nathan (Artsci’23), Maddy (Artsci’26), Amelia, and Jackson. 

Cathie was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, caring teacher and student counsellor, and a good friend to so many.

In 1961 Cathie came to Queen’s to pursue post-secondary studies. She loved her years as a Queen’s student, where she made many lasting friendships. In her final year at Queen’s she met Don on a blind date on Friday, Dec. 13, 1963, and for both of them it was a lucky day since it was love at first sight. For the next two years there was a long distance relationship as Cathie moved back to Etobicoke to attend Lakeshore Teachers’ College in 1964-65 and then started her first teaching job with the Etobicoke Board of Education at Wellesworth Junior Public School the following year. Meanwhile, Don was finishing his legal studies at Queen’s, which culminated in his being awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship to Oxford University.

On July 23, 1966, Cathie and Don were married at Islington United Church in Etobicoke. Their married life in Toronto was brief; in early September they travelled to England on a Cunard liner along with the other Canadian recipients of the Commonwealth Scholarship. It was a magical time for them both, as they made many new friends on the voyage, during the first week of orientation for Commonwealth scholars in London, and after they arrived in Oxford. A few months after their arrival, Cathie found a teaching job at the Crescent School (a small private elementary school in the centre of Oxford), where her students delighted in hearing her Canadian accent. Toward the end of their first year at Oxford, they purchased a new VW Beetle, allowing them to travel extensively in the U.K. and make a nine-week camping trip through Europe in the summer of 1967.

In 1968, Cathie and Don returned to Canada and Kingston, where Cathie took up a teaching position at Centennial Public School, which had opened a year earlier. During her two years at Centennial School, Cathie’s talents as a teacher came to the attention of the senior administration of the Frontenac County Board of Education, who persuaded her to become a language arts resource teacher for the following year. During that year, she travelled to every school in Frontenac County to offer advice to classroom teachers.

In 1971, her life took a much different direction when she became pregnant. That year Cathie and Don moved from their apartment on Queen Mary Road, to a new house on Bicknell Crescent in Kingston West. In October of that year, Ian arrived and Cathie threw her remarkable energies into motherhood, homemaking, and making many new friendships in the neighbourhood. Their second son, Colin, arrived three years later.

In 1976, Cathie and Don moved to Toronto after Don was appointed as Chair of the Ontario Labour Relation’s Board for three years. Despite the disruption to her life, Cathie was soon able to form new friendships in Toronto: first, on Wallingford Road in Don Mills, and then on Lynngrove Avenue in Etobicoke for the last two years of Don’s term at the labour board.

Cathie, however, was a Kingston person at heart and was very happy to return in 1979 and make a home in a historic limestone row house at a downtown location on Clergy Street. Cathie loved that home and neighborhood and lived there for almost 40 years.

By the early 1980s, Cathie was looking for a new outlet for her talents and joined the Queen’s School of English as an ESL instructor. What began as a part-time job evolved over the years into a full-time position as teacher and student counsellor. Cathie worked at the School of English until 2001 with a break for a sabbatical year in Australia in 1984-85. Over those years she formed strong friendships with her colleagues and left a lasting imprint on her students, some of whom remained in contact. 

Her life took another change at the turn of the new century with the marriage of Ian to Chrissie Yao in 2000 and the marriage of Colin to Heather Cross in 2008. The year 2001 marked a new stage in Cathie’s life, as she became a grandmother for the first time with the birth of Nathan. At that point, Cathie retired from the School of English to assist Chrissie and Ian with childcare. Maddy was born three years later and Amelia and Jackson arrived together in 2009. Cathie loved all of her grandchildren dearly and she put her full energy into making sure that none of them were under-indulged.

Her retirement years also gave her full scope to pursue her love of travel. There were many happy trips over the years with good friends. As a great reader, she also became an active member of a book club and enjoyed the lively discussions and friendships of that group. At the same time, Cathie threw her full energies into community activities, serving as a board member of K3C and participating actively in the Outreach Committee of Chalmers United Church. Her ���˴�Ƭ volunteer passion, however, was the Kingston Grandmother Connection, which provided support to both Help Lesotho and the Stephen Lewis Foundation in their important mission to support African grandmothers attempting to deal with the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS upon their families.

Cathie was a beautiful person. Her smile could light up a room. She had a refined aesthetic sense, always making the right choice in what she wore and how she decorated her home. She was a loving mother and grandmother, who took great personal delight in the accomplishments of her children, her two daughters-in-law, and her grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, who encouraged and supported her husband. She was always a kind and empathetic friend, who left a legacy of the friendships she made over the years, whether in Kingston, Toronto, Oxford, or Melbourne.

Norma Frances (née Genge) Hargreaves died peacefully in Kingston, Ont., on June 25, 2023, with her family by her side. Norma is survived by her daughters, Vicki (Artsci/Ed'90), Gayle (Artsci'80) (spouse Peter Muir), and Lynn Hargreaves; cherished grandsons, Jeremiah (spouse Hannah Peck) and Eli (spouse Ginny Kozemczak) Bach, their father, Michael Bach, Alexander (spouse Li Xiaowei - Vivienne) and Peter Gordon Muir; great grandchildren, Evan, Chloe, and Marcus Muir; sister-in-law, Judy Hargreaves (the late C. Ward Hargreaves); and a large extended family. Norma’s beloved husband of 60 years, J.W. Douglas Hargreaves (BA'60; LLD hc 2012), predeceased her in 2016.

Born in Smith Falls, Ont., on Sept. 15, 1933, Norma grew up in Westport, Ont., where her parents, Blanche (Bauder) and Percival Genge, ran the Genge General Store. Always at or near the top of her class at school, Norma loved to swim, skate, and ski. She studied classical piano through the Royal Ontario Conservatory of Music, but she was also known to set the room bouncing with a little boogie-woogie. Norma held her own as the only girl in a family of boys: brothers Bernard “Bud” (Patricia "Pat"), James “Jim”(BSc'48) (Dorothy), and cousin Walter “Gus” Layfield (Sara “Sally,” now Milne) predeceased her, excepting Sara.

Norma pursued a nursing career, graduating from the Kingston General Hospital (KGH) School of Nursing in 1955. She was a member of the Queen’s Nursing Science class of 1956. Norma worked in neonatal intensive care at KGH and at Izaak Walton Killam Hospital in Halifax, N.S., and in the KGH Fraser Armstrong medical clinics. After retiring, Norma volunteered for many years with KGH Auxiliary and the Cancer Society.

While studying nursing, Norma met the love of her life, Doug Hargreaves, who came to Queen's as an Officer Cadet in the University Reserve Training Program and went on to become one of the most recognized and respected figures in Canadian university football. Norma and Doug married in 1956, then moved to Moose Jaw, Sask., where they started their family and Doug served as an RCAF flight instructor. With grace and fortitude, Norma managed many relocations (and three daughters) during Doug’s career.

Norma and Doug were delighted to return to Kingston in 1976, where Doug served as Head Football Coach of the Queen’s University Golden Gaels and Associate Professor in the School of Physical Education. Doug had a long and successful career as a coach and educator. In 2012, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Queen's in recognition of his contributions to the university, intercollegiate athletics, the sport of football nationally and in Europe, and for the positive impact he had on the lives of many hundreds of young people. Through these years, Norma was his solid rock, and number one Gael’s football fan. Like Doug, Norma took a personal interest in the well-being of the young people she knew. More than a few of Doug’s players and students think of Norma as a “second Mom,” or even “Saint Norma.” Many remember her kindness and generosity, as well as the quiet yet supportive steadying influence she had on “Coach.”

Before retirement and after, as they sailed, skied and traveled in North America and Europe, Norma and Doug were anchors for their family. They made friends of all ages and walks of life. The cottage they built north of Kingston became a much-loved family gathering place. Norma and Doug spent early retirement winters skiing, building a community of friends in the Rocky Mountains.

Through all of this, Norma went out of her way to help others: whether through a kind word, a home-cooked meal for a lonely student, a place to stay – her compassion and thoughtfulness knew no bounds. Norma was the steadfast light and warm heart of her family. She was loved for her kind and generous nature, her inquisitive mind, and her devotion to family.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Norma’s life on Saturday, July 29 at The Cove Inn in Westport, Ontario, beginning at 12 p.m.

On May 2, Katherine Dinner, lover of public health, teller of stories, and Queen’s Life Science class of 1978, passed away in Ottawa. 

After leaving Queen’s, Katherine went on to achieve her Master’s in Nursing from McGill and from that point on never stopped helping others. She was a devoted public servant, working for Health Canada for over 20 years and becoming a champion and mentor for the rookies on staff. She was a proud recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2012. She was a loyal friend, who would regale those close to her with stories of her past lives as a student burning her nose hair out after smelling chemicals in the lab, or from her time on reserve as an RN for Indigenous communities in the north to her always captive audiences. She was our family’s inaugural member of the Queen’s cult, a legacy continued by Laura Dinner (BComm'82), William Rooney (Artsci'17) and Trish Rooney (Artsci'20). 

Kathy was imagination. She was a loving aunt, an eldest sister to the very end, a favourite cousin and niece, and a daughter who will, more than anything, be so happy to be reunited with her mom and dad. 

In her final act of selflessness, her lungs were donated in a living organ transplant. She simply couldn’t leave this world without giving a piece of herself to one more person, one last time. She will be so missed.

John Peter Dufton, age 81, died in Almonte, Ont., on Feb. 18, 2023, after a long illness. Peter is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his children, Jennifer Dufton (Paul) and John Dufton (Monique); and his sister, Carol Russell (Glen). He will be sorely missed by his grandchildren: Daniel, Alexandra, Finn, Jasper, Jasmine, Megan, Hannah and Everett.

Peter will be remembered for his love of life, his exuberant personality, his infectious laugh and engaging smile. Behind the smile lay an intelligent, witty, loyal and creative man. He and his wife Marilyn, enjoyed nearly 60 years of marriage as best friends, partners, and parents.

Peter attended Queen’s (Engineering). This led to a career in telecommunications research at Automatic Electric in Brockville and Microtel Pacific Research in Vancouver. During his 30 year career, several patents for his work were registered in his name. 

Post retirement, Peter’s second professional career was with an Ottawa Company, where he developed simplified code for performing radiation shielding calculations.

Peter was an avid curler — a lifelong passion. While growing up in Montreal, he discovered the game and every winter, until well into his 70s, he could be found on the curling rink with his team and many good friends. 

In quiet times, he spent endless hours researching the Dufton family tree and the history of Bedford Mills. Peter loved gardening, working with wood, renovating and rebuilding, as evidenced by his many projects at the family cottage on Devil Lake. There he enjoyed an outdoor lifestyle with his cousins and friends. Summers with his children and grandchildren were the highlight of every year.

Carol Ann “Annie” Hillock (nee Smith) passed away May 23, 2023 at the age of 61. She is survived by her husband, Kevin; daughter, Sarah; and son, Stephenson; sister, Lorna Winstone (Smith) (Artsci/Ed’86); brother-in-law, Trent Winstone (MBA’88); as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Annie was instrumental in keeping her nursing class together throughout the years with the biannual “Anecdotal Note” nursing newsletter and key in coordinating the class alumni reunions. Her infectious spirit was evident, as she loved to see people connected through nursing, sports activities, crafts, and community-minded projects. In 2010 she was elected to the Queen’s University Council as an alumni representative. For the last six years she was chair of the nominating committee, overseeing the election of alumni to the council.

She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

J. Robert "Bob" Clark’s long battle with cancer ended on April 28, 2023. He passed away peacefully with loved ones at his side. He was 89.

Bob was the beloved husband of Mary Ellen (Monaghan) for 69 years; the loving father of Meri-Sue, Michael, Mark, and Margaret (John Conroy); the grandfather of seven and the great-grandfather of seven. He was the brother of Barbara Tuff (late Ken), Bill (Patti), and the late Bevin and Barry.

The son of the late Stanley and Agnes (McCallum) Clark, Bob spent his early life in Dutton, Ont., and enjoyed frequent visits to his McCallum grandparents' farm in Cowal. He started his education in Dutton Public School. The Clark family moved to St. Thomas, Ont., where Bob continued his education at Scott Street Public School and St. Thomas Collegiate Institute. He then attended Queen's, where he studied Civil Engineering.

Bob's professional career in the railway industry, which included 38 years with the New York Central Railroad and its successors, began with three summers as an undergraduate working with the division engineer's office of the New York Central in St. Thomas. As a new graduate, he joined that same office as an instrument man. Subsequently, he forged a path to become assistant vice president – engineering at Conrail in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Bob was honoured to be elected president of the American Railway Engineering Association for the 1989-1990 term. His very successful career was recognized by his selection to the North America Railway Hall of Fame, aptly headquartered in the old St. Thomas railway building where he launched his career.

Following his retirement from Conrail, Bob consulted on railway projects from Australia to Mexico until well into his 80s.

Bob enjoyed traveling with Mary Ellen and spending time with his family. He was an excellent and competitive athlete in his youth and a lifelong sports fan. All who knew him will miss his unfailing drive, sense of humor, and generosity.

Lynne Thompson, née Melinda Jean Klein, passed away on Nov. 4, 2022, at the age of 73. She was the daughter of the late William Joseph Klein and Betty Ann Klein (née Grieve). She leaves behind her loving husband, Eric Callum Thompson and their two children: Jennifer Erin Thompson-Croft (Jason Croft) and Benjamin Andrew Thompson (Victoria Ulloa-Caldwell Thompson); and beloved grandchildren, Alden Callum Croft and Scotland Grace Thompson. She was predeceased by her brother, Michael Klein (Lou Klein), and leaves behind her brother David Klein (Janet Klein), as well as many nieces, nephews, and of course their four-legged fur baby, Freckles.

Lynne was born in St. Thomas, Ont., but, with her father being a bank manager with the Bank of Montreal, the family lived in various communities in southwestern Ontario, including Tara, the town she always called home. The family built a cottage outside of Bobcaygeon when Lynne was growing up and this became the Klein homestead in retirement. Lynne had many fond memories of the property known as Rocky River Retreat. 

She attended Waterloo Lutheran University (later Wilfrid Laurier University), where she met Eric, who was her English literature professor. The two married in 1970 and moved to Chicoutimi, Que., where Eric was a professor until his retirement. Lynne worked as a librarian at the English school in the area, until she ventured back to attend pre-law studies in 1991, before ultimately completing her law degree at Queen’s. 

She practiced as a criminal defense lawyer until 2017 in Burlington, Ont., where she and Eric lived together until 2020, when they relocated to Ottawa, Ont. They shared an interest in travel, and together cruised around the world through Eric’s retirement with many memories of excursions and exploring different cultures.

Lynne will be remembered by all who knew her as full of life, fiercely loyal to her family, with a wonderful sense of humour and humanity. 

Dr. Richard McCutcheon bravely battled cancer, but passed away peacefully at home on April 27, 2023. He was the beloved husband to Dr. Amelia McCutcheon; father to Jody, Mark, Kim, Scott, and Chris; and daughters-in-law, Dr. Praveena Sivananthan and Dr. Jennie Baxter Ito; loving grandfather to Lakshman, Maya, Kira, Benjamin, and Charlotte.

Richard was an anesthesiologist (Queen’s ‘61 grad) for almost 50 years at Northwestern Hospital and Humber River Regional Hospital. He was a medical volunteer with Operation Smile and Hospital on Wheels Philippines, helping thousands of people.

He and Amy loved travelling. He always had a smile and kind words for everyone. His favourite hobbies included: writing, reading, wine and coffee, morning puzzles, movies, and sports. He was an American Civil War history buff. He loved music and sang in the Greenborough Church choir.

In retirement he enjoyed living in The Beach, playing frisbee with Amy by the lake and making friends along Queen Street. He loved doing video chats to connect with family and friends around the world. Richard will be dearly missed.

Dr. Henry B. Dinsdale passed away on May 30, 2023. He is dearly missed by children, Janyce MacDonald (John Colden), Scott (Jennifer, Sandi), Henry (Diane Wherrett), and Martha Thomson (Anthony); grandchildren, Kate MacDonald (Brandon Law), Sarah MacDonald (Ben Curtis), Lizzie MacDonald (Jonathan Ludwig), Morgan Dinsdale, Taylor Dinsdale (Trevor Morgan), Maddy Dinsdale, Ben Dinsdale (Maddy Godin), Emily Thomson (Jesse Topley); and great-grandchildren, Cedric, Angus and Malcolm Law. He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Doris Dinsdale of Peterborough, Ontario; and brothers, Jack and Sidney.

Head Department of Medicine, ���˴�Ƭ Scientific Director, Queen’s Cardiopulmonary Unit (QCPU): 

It is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of Dr. Henry B. Dinsdale, Professor Emeritus, Division of Neurology. Dr. Dinsdale was a leader in medicine both at Queen’s and on the national stage. He is fondly remembered as a world class neurologist, department head and colleague.

Dr. Dinsdale graduated in medicine from Queen’s, which was followed by clinical and research training in neurology at the Maudsley Hospital and National Hospital, Queens Square, London and the Harvard Neurological Unit, Boston City Hospital. He returned to the Faculty of Medicine at Queen’s, where he was professor and head of the Department of Medicine, as well as the associate dean for research. After his “retirement” as head of the Department of Medicine, he worked as an outpatient general neurologist for 17 years and treated thousands of patients. Dr. Dinsdale’s major research interests and publications were in the area of stroke and the effects of hypertension on the blood-brain barrier.

Dr. Dinsdale retired from clinical duties in 2014 after 53 years of service to Queen’s and neurological patients. As department head, I had the pleasure of establishing the Dr. Henry B. Dinsdale Visiting Lectureship to acknowledge his significant contributions to Queen’s Department of Medicine, and in June 2014, his service was recognized with the inaugural Dinsdale Medical Grand Rounds lecture, as well as a bench dedication ceremony.

Dr. Dinsdale was past president of the Canadian Congress for Neurological Sciences and past member of the executive of the American Academy of Neurology. He was a member and vice-president of the Medical Research Council of Canada. He was a founding member and past president of the National Council on Ethics in Human Research. Dr. Dinsdale was past president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He was a member of the Order of Canada and an honorary fellow of the College of Physicians of London, the Australasian College of Physicians and the College of Physicians of South Africa. 

When I think of Henry, I think of excellence, commitment to the profession, and a selfless commitment to advancing academic medicine in Canada. We were lucky to have him in our midst these many decades. He will be missed, but his values and goals continue on in the department. I know he was thrilled to see the growth of the Neurology Division and the expansion of the Department of Medicine.

To the Dinsdale family, and especially his wife June, I extend my heartfelt sympathy. Thank you for sharing Henry with us throughout his long and illustrious career. We are with you in spirit as you mourn his passing, but also with you as you celebrate his rich life and vast legacy, both personal and professional. To my colleagues in the Department of Medicine, please join me in remembering a giant amongst physicians who advanced excellence in Queen’s Department of Medicine and who elevated patient care and medical education at Kingston General Hospital and Queen’s.

Harold (Hal) Pringle passed away on Feb. 5, 2023 at age 97 in Ancaster, Ont. Hal is survived by his children, Jane (Bob), Andrew (Sandi), Jake (Bill); and his grandchildren, Victoria and Rob. He was predeceased by his first wife, Joyce, and second wife, June.

Harold’s parents, Frank Pringle (BSc’17) and Nettie Pringle (nee Johnson), met at Queen’s. His mother came from a long-time Kingston family and, evidently, Johnson Street was named after her family. Harold’s parents settled in Hamilton, where he was born on Nov. 19, 1925. 

He graduated from Queen’s with his Commerce degree in 1948 and said many times over the years that the saddest day of his life was the day he graduated. He became a chartered accountant and spent several years at what was then Coopers & Lybrand, including about 10 years as the managing partner of the Hamilton office. He saw two of his three kids go to Queen’s — Jake (Artsci’88) and Andrew (Com'85).

Linda Lee Hoffman (Baker), 59, went home to be with Jesus on Friday, May 12, 2023. She leaves her father, Larry; her husband, Dave; and two precious daughters, Monica and Anna-Lee.

Born in Hamilton and raised in Chatham and Toronto, Linda went to Queen’s, where she met Dave. After graduating in 1987 as a nurse, Linda and Dave were married.

Besides her family, Linda’s two ���˴�Ƭ joys were homeschooling her children and serving Jesus. She excelled at both, graduating both daughters from high school. She also served the homeschooling community by helping with the annual conference and speaking at conferences. Linda had a passion for serving missionaries, worshiping the Lord, and praying. Later “Mrs. H” also taught Sunday school, bringing the authority of God’s word to life.

Linda’s legacy is a life well lived for God and of love for her family and people.

Gord Jarvis passed away peacefully in Ottawa on August 7, 2022, at the age of 100 years. Gord was the son of the late Arthur and Yvonne Jarvis; the beloved husband of Mary Reeve (deceased) and, later, the husband of Ursula Tudor-Parker. He is survived by his two remaining sons, Greg (Jennifer) and Ian (Sabine); nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his late son, David (Alison) and his late sister, Marie Wardrope. 

He was an honours graduate from Ridley College (1939); a Queen’s graduate (1943); and Western University graduate (1949). Gord served as a Lieutenant during the Second World War (1943-1945). Gord enjoyed a long management career at Canadian General Electric (1952-1984). His pastimes included skiing, golf and curling. 

John Alexander Wilson Gunn, a world-renowned scholar in 17th and 18th-century political thought, died March 7, 2023, in Kingston.

Known professionally as J.A.W. Gunn, he was called “Jock” by family and friends. Jock is survived by his partner, Mary Jane; children, James and Andrea (Manuel); and brother, Ted (Louise).

Jock was born in Quebec City in 1937. He earned an honours B.A. in politics and history from Queen's in 1959; an M.A. in political economy from the University of Toronto in 1961; and a DPhil from Nuffield College, University of Oxford, in 1966.

Jock joined the Queen’s Political and Economic Science department in 1960 as a lecturer, while still completing his graduate studies. His professors at Queen’s, John Meisel and Alec Corry, had recognized their former student’s spark of brilliance, and wanted to bring him back to Kingston. After Jock completed his doctoral studies, he returned to Queen’s to support the nascent Department of Political Studies under the direction of Meisel, who later wrote in his memoirs: “In Jock Gunn, we recruited a peerless scholar whose extensive command of the literature and commitment to a lofty ideal of a university added a significant dimension to what we had to offer.”

Jock’s doctoral thesis (directed by John Plamenatz) was later published as Politics and the Public Interest in the Seventeenth Century (1969). In 1971, he published Factions No More: Attitudes to Party in Government and Opposition in Eighteenth-Century England.

While still a student, Jock worked with Frontier College, supporting that organization’s goal to bring literacy and the love of reading to adult learners. As a professor, Jock challenged his students to read deeply, think critically, and write clearly and sensibly. In his classroom, Jock never relied on notes: in his lectures, he spoke both spontaneously and eloquently on political ideas and ideals. His classes were designed to spark intellectual curiosity and to help his students utilize existing – or develop new – skills in comprehension, inquiry, and analysis. In addition to his undergraduate teaching, Jock supervised 14 doctoral students. Many of his students, both undergraduate and graduate, kept in touch with him decades after they graduated. Some of his best students went on to become writers, journalists, diplomats, lawyers, policymakers, and teachers; Jock followed each of their career paths with interest.

Between 1975 and 1983, Jock served as head of the Department of Political Studies at Queen’s. There, he was one of three editors of the first two volumes of the letters of Benjamin Disraeli (1982). Jock’s next book, Beyond Liberty and Property: The Process of Self-Recognition in Eighteenth-Century Political Thought, was published in 1983. This work, drawing upon a variety of primary sources, from newspapers and political pamphlets to parliamentary debates, sermons, and private correspondence, offered a bold new approach to the understanding of the public mind and political ideas in Britain. That year, Jock was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the social sciences.

Later turning to the study of French political ideas, Jock published Queen of the World: Opinion in the Public Life of France from the Renaissance to the Revolution in 1995. The same year, succeeding his colleague John Meisel, he was appointed by the Queen’s Board of Trustees the Sir Edward Peacock Professor of Political Studies, a position that honours outstanding contribution to the field of political studies. His citation noted that Jock was “one of the department’s most distinguished academics over the past three decades. His international reputation in political thought has brought credit both to the department and the university.” Jock allocated a portion of the funds associated with the Peacock Chair to purchase items for the British Political Pamphlets Collection at the Queen’s University Library. He also contributed his expertise in recommending notable and rare acquisitions for the library.

Jock retired officially from Queen’s in 2002 but, for several years and due to popular demand, came back to teach undergraduate courses. His last book, When the French Tried to Be British: Party, Opposition, and the Quest for Civil Disagreement 1814 - 1848, was published in 2009.

Katrina Teresa Latawiec Mahboob passed away on Jan. 8, 2023. Throughout her 27 years, Katrina always strove to be the most genuine, passionate, and thoughtful soul in the universe. Her unashamed dedication to others and fight for what she believed in will always be remembered and forever celebrated. Her piercing smile, wit, and elegance never failed to melt hearts. Beautiful inside and out, her flame never extinguished. 

For everyone who had the chance to meet or interact with her, you knew she was simply too angelic for us. She truly embodied the notion of wearing your heart on your sleeve, always seeking the absolute best in people, regardless of anything. Wholeheartedly believing every single person deserves forgiveness and should be given the best chance to succeed, no matter what. And for how humble she always was, you’d be hard pressed to think she was nearly as intimidatingly intelligent as she really was. 

Born in Toronto on Feb. 23, she graduated from the Etobicoke School of the Arts, leading a successful modelling career on the runway and acting as the face of multiple luxury fashion campaigns. She also excelled in athletics, placing third for cross-country in Ontario. However, she decided her true passion was in business and data analysis. 

Following a short stint at Trent University, she enrolled in Smith School of Business and went on to obtain her BCom and BA in Computing, consistently placing in the top of her peer group and was in the process of completing her graduate studies. She did all this while participating in many CASEiT competitions, helping newer students as a much-loved teaching assistant, and pursuing multiple research projects using novel artificially intelligent methodologies to improve the world around us. She was most recently working as a senior management consultant at Oliver Wyman, leading some of their most complex data-based projects. Quickly recognized by her co-workers for her unique insights and dedication, she was taken under the wing of the head of digital projects where, among many things, she helped mould guidelines and procedures to improve collaborative approaches to data- and coding-centric problems. On the side, between one of her many mesmerizing karaoke and dancing sessions, Katrina was also actively working to help resolve the many  issues affecting primary-care physicians and their patients. Her focus on charitable causes and legacy for betterment will be faithfully continued. 

She will always be loved and missed dearly by her husband, Hammaad Mahboob, her parents, Adam and Vivian, her sister Veronika Latawiec, her friends, and all who had the pleasure of meeting her — until the end of time. 

Bruce Harper Findlay passed away on Jan. 14, 2023. He is survived by his children; Jennifer (Tim), Richard (Diane), Allison, Alexandra (Rick), Janet (Joel), Alana, and Trish; his grandchildren, Marston (Synthia), Ryan, Nelson (Veronik), Colin, Taylor (Cory), Colter (Cody), Hannah, Brad (Emily), Erika, Nick, Emme, Ircia, Tyvan, Jakob, Emily, Hayden, Logan, Holly, and Megan; and his great-grandchildren, Isaac and Axton.

Bruce was one of a kind. He grew up on Park Street with his parents; Alexander and Mary (nee Kerr); his two brothers, Dave (Jeannette) and Ron; and his sisters, Patricia Huntus (Hoit) and Judy Favreau (Bud). His family shaped the strong values he stayed true to throughout his life.

His early years in the militia and the reserves led to a military-like discipline in his life from his ship-shape boats to raising his family and running a busy law office. He was famous for his beret; a life-long signal that those military days were never far away.

Bruce was a Queen’s man through and through, trying to talk each of his children and then the grandchildren into following in his footsteps.

It was while he was at Osgoode Law School in Toronto that Bruce was introduced to Eileen Haffey. They were married in January 1959 and had their first child in October of that same year. Bruce graduated from law school with two children and another on the way. He supported his growing family and his education with a wide array of jobs, including: railroading, construction, transport truck driving, and the pipeline.

In 1962, he and “Neen” headed to Kenora to build their life. He loved his time in Toronto and always had an attachment to city life, but also valued the importance of growing up in a small community.

The law was a perfect fit for a man with such strong principles and a gift for twisting a tale to convince the jury, his family or anyone else who was listening. He was a force to be reckoned with in and out of the courtroom. He built his law firm from a one-person practice to a multi-lawyer firm with offices in Dryden and Fort Frances. The family has fond memories of the many law students who passed through and became a part of our lives, and the long-term staff, especially Shirley Tresoor and Carolyn Johnson.

In 1968, Bruce and Neen purchased a camp on Coney Island. The neighbours loved to tell the story of the lovely young couple and their new baby, who were going to move in next door. The reality hit when the family arrived that first summer, landing at the dock and swarming up and over the hill like an army. The family became firm friends with the Inman’s from that moment and became part of the extended Coney Island family. The departure of Bruce means that another elder Coney Island statesman is gone. The family lived at Coney for three months each year and, in 2000, Bruce and Neen built their year-round home and retired full time to the island. The property holds many great family memories of beach days and family dinners for three generations.

It was at Coney that Bruce learned to make the porridge he was famous for, as all the grandkids and visitors to the camp were served porridge with maple syrup for breakfast.

Bruce was a man who loved to spend time messing about with boats, starting with “the pontoon boat” and later the 24’ Grew, the 30’ “Russian Boat” hydrofoil, and the 40’ Nord Ouest, all driven at “Bruce speed.” His years with Power Squadron served him well and he navigated the Nord Ouest to adventures throughout the Lake of the Woods, including annual trips to Warroad and often following LOWISA. Stories about adventures on the Nord Ouest will be told for many years to come. He instilled this love of the lake in all of us.

After Neen’s death in 2014, Bruce experienced some health issues and lost his zest for life, until he met Loretta Edlund in 2016. Loretta gave him love and laughter again. The two of them spent hours together laughing, playing bridge, telling stories, and enjoying the peace and nature at Coney. It has been so good for us to see Bruce happy again and we love having Loretta as part of our family.

Bruce’s final life transition happened in September 2022, when he moved to Pinecrest. He understood he could no longer get in and out of a boat the way he used to and that life on the island needed younger legs. He took Pinecrest by storm and made an impact for the short time he was there.
