    John David More

    鈥 MPA鈥91, MA鈥15, PhD鈥21

    Fall 2023

John David More recently published his seventh book in collaboration with Marie Edwards. Pierre's Song: The Beaupres of Portsmouth, published by Friesenpress, is a colourful history of the Beaupre family, which moved to Kingston in 1814 to work in the British Royal Dockyard. The men became well-known shipbuilders (steam and sail) in Kingston, nearby Portsmouth Village, and throughout the region. Edouard Beaupre was one of the founders of the village municipal government; became its tax collector; and built the Portsmouth Tavern in 1864, which remains a popular watering hole to this day. Edouard's son, Peter Moffat Beaupre, became a guard and quarry supervisor for Kingston Penitentiary and the family contributed materially to the construction of the Catholic Church of the Good Thief in Portsmouth Village. The book illuminates the little known history of how much French Canadians contributed to the survival and growth of Kingston and Ontario.
