Donor Story:
Fred Delaney passed away “Peacefully at St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital after a lengthy illness on Thursday January 12, 2012. Beloved husband of Elaine McCallum. Loving father of Megan and Peter. Dear brother of Anna, Dianne, Mary, John and Corleen Delaney. Brother in law of Mac (Bev) and Pat (Shirley). Cherished uncle of Bradley, Ken, Bill, Yvonne, Randy. Also survived by numerous cousins, colleagues and friends.”
Fred had a strong sense of pride and love for this family, home, community and his profession. Fred practiced law for 34 years in Gananoque and became its mayor in 1985 serving for three terms. He thoroughly enjoyed team sports hockey, baseball and golf along with boating, fishing and hunting.
Fred found many lasting friendships over the years with people from all walks of life. Fellowship was important to Fred; he so enjoyed hockey and golf tournaments with his colleagues, his motto being “Work Together, Play Together”.
Fred was committed to his community through work with the Kinsmen Club, Regional Director for the Cancer Society, Waterworks Commissioner, Police Commissioner, Small claims court judge Brockville, town council and ultimately became the Mayor of Gananoque for three terms. As Mayor he was instrumental in Gananoque’s Festival of the Islands.
Fred often said if it was not for the support and guidance of influential people in his life like Mary Alice Murray, Registrar of Law School at that time, affectionately known as “Maw Murray” having inspired him to believe in himself and that if you worked hard you would achieve your goals, he probably would never have made it.
This quote is very befitting and was Fred’s philosophy of life: “you have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” It isn’t always about the money; it’s about looking after one another. As a result, Fred did a lot of pro bono work hoping it would somehow help others achieve their goals. This Fund is the opportunity to carry on with Fred’s last pro bono project and help deserving students to reach their goals.
Fund Description:
Established in memory of Fred Delaney, BCom 1972, Law 1975. Awarded to students entering first year of the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business, or the J.D. program or the combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law.
